Need starter for 82 454

I need a new starter. Engine is a 454 from a 82 2wd pickup. I have a th400 behind that. Looking around and some people say the late 90s vortec trucks have a good starter. Will that fit on my 82 engine? Whats the tooth count on the flexplate? Any other starters to consider?

Should be 168 tooth flex plate. Starters are the same between sbc and bbc's as long as you keep the same tooth count on the plate. I would upgrade to a mini starter. More power with less weight. Most have a dual bolt pattern to work on either a 153 or 168. A starter from a Vortech truck would work, I don't know if it's any better than your old one though.

get the small starter from 1996+ Vortec trucks
we are using it on all 454 rebuilds ( around 9.5 :1 compression ) and it is much better than the old style big one
make sure you get the correct bolts with it ( shorter than the old style )

Napa wants $130 plus $60 core for a mini vortec starter. They won't take a old big starter for a core. Might try the retards at orielly here or a friend might have a junk vortec starter I can have for a core. What about the mini high torque starters I see on eBay for like $150? Or should I hold off for a vortec starter?
