The 5.4 is a wuss of a motor for this heavy of a truck. My '02 F350 with the 6.8 and 4.30 gears will flat out haul. I drag a 26' 7500Lb trailer over the passes in CO at or above the speed limit. MPG is at 14 HWY and 10 towing.
The Tcase should be an NVG271 with a shifter and NVG273 with the clicky knob. Get the manual hubs as the autos are a bit less reliable.
I run an auto box in mine and it does O.K. for what it is. The 5 or 6 speed would be better though.
