I have a 1972 k-5 blazer we took the sraight 6 out and repalced it with a 350 chevy small block. I got it to turn over twice but now it will not fire. I have replaced the coil, the points, condenser, starter and still no spark. I have wracked my brian for three days and my knuckles trying to figure out what is the problem can get it to crank just not start.

Turned over? You mean the motor turns over but will not fire.

Check for power going to the coil, and the motor is grounded, thats the first things that come to mind.

Do you have a wire going from the (R) terminal of the starter solenoid to the positive side of the coil? This was a common thing on the early GM points systems to make starting easier as it gave a full 12 volts to the ignition coil ONLY WHILE CRANKING. If you put 12 volts to a set of points they will fry within a short amount of time which is why there is either a resistor wire from the ignition switch to the coil, a ballast resistor between the ignition switch wire and the coil to reduce voltage OR a resistor coil.

If thr ignition system has power, It also needs a signal of when to fire. If there is no signal it won't fire. If the signal is not correct it will fire at the wrong time.

Pull a plug wire and check for spark, If it sparks you have power and a signal. Therefore it is firing at the wrong trime. Set your timing from scratch and try again.

If there is no spark, You either have no signal, or no power. Check for power at the coil. Check your signal by ensuring points are set properly and rotor is spinning.

Personally I would throw an HEI setup on there

If your gonna go through the trouble of swapping a 6 for an 8 why run points when hei is so much easier and better? One wire and done.

I have no spark will check the points again, thank you and guess I will go from there. HEI was to much money put all the money into the motor so have to go old school.

$130 for a distributor with coil ready to run is too much? I'm a cheap @$$ SOB and buy a new HEI dizzy when I build a motor.

Brian likes HEI. As mentioned, if the ground cables are good, it doesn't sound like you have ignition.

Does anybody care enough to remember if the I6 had a different resistor feeding power to the points than the V8?

I guess I'm a cheaper one, but I may still go HEI cause sick of hitting my head against this wall

I got my hei distributor with wires for 30 bucks at the junkyard. Got home and put in on and have been using it like that for over a year lol. Was miles ahead of the old points.

GM coils, when you buy replacements at parts stores, should have a built in resistor. I don't recall the part #'s we sold at Advance, but I went thought a similar thing with a dude using a MSD blaster coil on his Malibu w/o any resistor.

Have you checked to see that the points are free and moving? No build up from arcing? A little "tit" between the points will cause a WORLD of issue. Probably a stupid question, but have you checked to see if the shaft of the distributor is moving when the engine cranks? Just because the engine is new doesn't mean you didn't get a faulty timing set. Just a though, I've never seen it happen, but you never know.

It's also possible that the condenser (capacitor) is shorted out as well. :waytogo:

the shaft of the distributor is rotating correctly, will recheck the points before i give up and look at a HEI. I replaced the capacitor earlier today when I replaced the points also and the coil pack.

Make sure that the wire going to the points isn't touching ground anywhere inside from either the insulation being tore away and the wire grounding out or by placing the wire in the wrong area of thr points and making contact with ground (common issues either way).

Maybe a dumb question -- But are you sure the distributor isn't in 180 degrees out? The engine will still fire now and then set backwards like that, but will never start.

Why is everyone picking on me?

X2 on the hei. I ran points on other cars and there was always issues related to them.
