find a 12 point socket that just bairly does not fit over the hex, try a metric if you have to. use a craftsman so you can return it WHEN it cracks, they usually do. pound it on and impact it off. I have done this for friends more then once, works every time.

Good idea, I just liked the welding better. + it makes a better vid, don't ya thunk??? And I hate goin' ta Sears, and my back-up car was blocked by the non-running POS Plow Teeruk...

Glad ya liked the vid, turned out well. I was getting worn out, and it's hard to be smiley and chipper for the "acting" part... Ug

a few tricks i've used (not on mine. i don't lose my key thing like my friends and family do.)

option 1) hammer an old socket onto the nut and turn like normal

option 2) grind flat sides onto the nut and use a wrench or socket

opton 3) hammer on it in a counter-clockwise motion with a chisel or screwdriver and it might break loose

option 4) cut that thing off.

Those look like the old gorilla locks that have the little pattern on the head for the key to fit into. I had two different sets of those once and the keys were interchangeable. You might try "any" gorilla key and see if it works.

Of course, after enough uses, the heads of those things wear out. I pounded a socket onto them and turned them off with a breaker bar, like somebody else suggested.

For a semi-float, drum brake rear axle, you can pull the diff cover and slide the axle shaft out with the drum and wheel still attached to grind the head off that wheel stud from the back. I think pounding a socket on is faster, though.

Used a good impact socket and never have had one break yet usually come off with no visible damage to the socket.
