I need to pull the diff cover and re-seal it. Should I just use RTV, let it set for a couple minutes and put it on or use some kind of rubber/cork seal.

Also what do you guys recommend for diff fluid and what weight? what about synthetics?

Truck is driven interstate 75%, city 20% and off roading 5%.

Also any cheap tricks to getting the fluid inside? Last time I tried, I was wearing more of it than getting inside.

RTV works great, no reason to use anything else. 80W-90 is a typical factory spec. Synthetic is great IMO for that application, long change interval and it will save you money for a vehicle that sees a fair amount of street time.

As for getting the fluid in, what diff? Any auto parts store should have a pump that screws onto the bottle, those are pretty money.

Rear diff. , sorry about that.

Also, how many quarts do I need? Im not looking at my service manual at the moment.

Thanks

just a peice of 3/8 clear tube is all i use. push it up tight on the tip kink it and flip it up side down, once it in unkink and let it flow

Haha, I actually meant to ask what rear axle?

Ah, yea, I seen my title and thought WTH? I posted it was the rear. lol

Its a factory 10bolt with a heavy duty billet cover. It MAY add 1/4 to 1/2 quart more capacity but that would be it.

I use a plastic soap pump bottle with a tube on the spout. Like amway sells, makes it real easy. :waytogo:

I rolled my grand national three times from 30 mph out of gear and it was so many yard till it came to a stop, then I changed the rear lube to amsoil syn lube, drove it a few miles to work it in then went the same spot and it rolled almost half again as far just from the slicker lube (remember the rear end lube does the bearings too). this adds up to better MPGs. :woot:

Also fill to 3/4 inch under the plug when using syn lube. thats how chevrolet does it when you got the sys option when they first started putting it in.

I'm with 77jimmy I always use a gasket.

I just did my 12 bolt rear today with 3 quarts of royal purple....
