Need Your opinion on this k20 I'm lokking at. update!!

No. Big Ugly was a regular cab longbed and was 19' from stem to stern.

16 ft. its alright if the bed hangs off a bit.

I talked further with the owner of this truck, and we settled at 6,200. The truck does have 66,000 original miles. and most of everything works.
He said both power windows stopped working, and the speedo does not work.
Also he said the steering feels alittle loose.

My questions
Does the speedo not working affect the mileage reading.

If both windows stopped working at the same time, It most likely would be a fuse, if not ive changed window motors before.

The steering is no big deal, I'm gonna go crossover when i lift it.

What you guys think,

The speedo not working probably means the odometer is wrong. Very rarely does the speedo itself fail, it's always the cable. A short drive will tell you if the odo works.

Yep, if the speedos not working, the odo doesn't either. Easiest fix would be to swap in a new cable as they're the cheaper route to start with at around $15-ish for a new cable from your local Pep-Girls.

Fuse would be the first, easiest and cheapest to start with. Installing new relays would be next followed by new motors which I would do as a last resort.

'Nuff said. Don't forget the YJ shaft, too.

What you guys think,

Frankly, I'm surprised the owner still has this truck. Its been 9 days from the original post to your latest reply today. A truck of this condition and price isn't something you pussyfoot and drag on day after day after day. You snatch it immediately because in this dog-eat-dog world, you're gonna be kicking yourself, hard, when you go back to the guys house to talk to him more and find out the truck had just been sold.

Remember, money talks and b u l l s h i t walks.

I dont think he's advertising it enough witch is good for me.
I haven't seen the truck in person yet, as he is 4 hours away. I spoke with him yesterday, and where settin something up for pickup. I probably should give him a deposit.

Also would this fit on a 16 ft trailer?

Make sure the deposit is a nice sum for him. Don't give him anything like $100 or $500. He can still sell it out from under you when someone else has all cash up front. Give him something to show that you're serious and mean business. Something like 1/3rd or 1/2 down and rest upon pick up.

Truck will fit a 16' trailer with the front and rear bumpers overhanging quite a bit. Practical? No, not really, but thats not to say its never been done before. 4 hours is a long trip on a trailer especially where the concern lies in such overhanging. That would mean frequent stops to check all the straps and tie-downs. Plus, it also depends on the overall weight rating limits on the trailer.

Why can't you drive it back home instead?

I'd rather drive it home, but I think it has to be registered and insured.
Simple. Get the VIN from the owner and go get it insured in your hometown and get a 30 day tag. Then go get it and drive it home.

Eh, depends on the state. I was surprised how hard it is to register a vehicle that you don't actually have in your possession here in Kentucky...and I'd consider it a "freer" state than New Jersey.

That said, MOST states will let you drive the vehicle you just purchased home. Most insurance companies will also write a policy for a vehicle you are purchasing assuming you can get the VIN ahead of time. I did that with The Tracker, got it insured and just drove it straight home with the guy's plate on it and then to the County Clerk's office the next day.

So a similar shape '87 K30 454/auto might be a good deal then at $2,300?

I don't need another vehicle, but I might get it and save it for a future purpose.

What is the story on the engine? Orange paint, old A/C compressor? Any better pics of the engine?

My insurance (allstate) will let me drive my newly purchased car up to 30 days without having to give them anything, as long as i have my insurance with them on my other cars.
They want it to be registered in my name before they write a policy so until then I am covered automatically.:D
As for the state, I don't know what the rule is, but I have purchased quite a few vehicles and I just drive them home, after all the law says you can drive a vehicle if you have a permission from the owner, and as long as it's currently registered, I am good to go.
Going on 10 years doing so, eiher I am really lucky or this state is not that bad in this case.
As for speedo not working, I would have to say any claims for accurate mileage with a bad speedo had better be backed up by something concrete or I call BS.

Now theres a dumb question that I'm being sarcastic about.

Go get pics of said truck and post it up here and let us judge for you.

I am really curious about the engine. I am guessing that isn't the factory engine, why would someone swap A/C compressors, or paint an engine in the frame?

Thats a good question, I'm gonna ask him whats goin on with that. He claims everything is mostly original.
Is there an easy way to see if the #'s match from the motor to the truck?
