I just got off the phone with a guy who has a matching set of axles from a 1968 3/4 4x4 Chevy truck. Both are drum brakes with matching 4.86:1 ratios. He things the front is a D60, but seeing as its a 3/4 ton I'm thinking D44. Anybody know for sure? He also said the rear is a D70. I thought eaton axles were used in the 67-72 trucks? Anybody know for sure on this one? He's wanting $475 for the set. Would you buy it?

Go and look....A lot could have been changed over the years /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The eaton axle pumpkin, I think, is rounded, and has a removeable third member.

the eaton has the removable 3rd member like the ford 9" and has a removable rear cover. the d60 front was nonavalable til 76 in the 1 ton also i don't think it came with drums either.

The Eaton is round like a Furd 9". You can remove both the carrier out the front, and the rear cover having an axle with a hole in the center, if that makes any sense....

That guy seems to be /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

stock axles for '68 Chevy are closed knuckle, kingpin dana 44 front axle with small u joints and large external hubs, and the eaton H052 rearend. the eatons had 0.01 lower gear ratios than the front axles, so stock ratios will be 4.10(4.11), 4.56(4.57), 5.13(5.14).
the eaton is a beefy axle, they could be had with a factory detroit locker. they are roughly the same size as the 14b, but have coarse spline axleshafts, which could affect strength.
i bought an eaton axle with the factory detroit locker in it for $100 complete, which I consider a good deal. However, even if the eaton in that combo had a DL, he is still asking too much $$ for it IMO. I have the same dana 44 as above in my GMC, but with a dana 60 rearend instead. it was fine for DD duty, but i'd be flat out scared to run it with bigger tires. i would say these style d44's are pretty much junk if you're into offroading at all.
