new 383 ht into a 1990 stock k5

I haven't, but I seriously considered this motor for a while for my build. But I really didn't want a carb and EFI system was gonna be another $1400 at least on top of it. I ended up with a RamJet 350. Torque isn't that far off the HT383, peaks at 400, to the HT383's 435. But the Ramjet is making 340 at 1500 where the HT383 is around 250. I really like that low end torque. Ramjet comes with factory GM EFI. It doesn't have the forged steel crank the HT383 has though.
But they've cranked up the price of the Ramjet for some reason, it was only $150 more than the HT383 back in 2010.
The thing today seems to be LS engines. The controllers for them are far more widely available now than they used to be even 2 years ago. And the kits various vendors here have make it a near drop in.

I think the HT383 is a great engine, it's also a great base to build a little bit more on. But for the $$$, you might find something with better specs. But the crates are nice, no worries, drop right in, fire it up.
