I have a good friend who will be retiring in a few months. He has a 1990 2wd Chevy work van that he wants to donate to me. The van has a new throttle body 454 with a newer 700r4 tranny. It has a 14 bolt rear but not sure which one it is or the gearing at this point. All the stuff would transfer over to the 77 Blazer ie. the radiator, trans cooler, etc. Im not sure about the fuel tank at this point. The motor in the Blazer is tired and cant seem to hold its fluids. Im just waiting to grenade the thing one of these desert trips and to be honest I don't want to even fool with trying to find the leaks. Ive changed everything out including the rear main seal, one piece pan gasket, new fuel pump gasket, valvecover gaskets, even a new oil pressure sending unit. I'm sure I can find a place for the 700r in on one of the hot rods. But what do you guys think about hooking up the newer 454 to the well used TH350? The TH350 was rebuilt about 10000 miles ago and still seems to shift well. The shift kit still slams hard when it shifts. Should I be looking for a 4x4 700r or a 4x4 TH400? I'm really wanting to get the 454 in the rig then I will have no excuse not to build my Expo trailer that I have been dreaming about for several years now. Any thoughts or ideas on a tranny swap? Wisdom from your experiences?

You sure it's a 700r4? With a 454 and a 14b, it sounds like a 2500 atleast, which would be a 400 or possibly a 4L80E.

No im not sure... The owner said he got it rebuilt and said it5 was a 700r with an over drive? I havent looked but will.

Very important to find out. 700r4= crap. 400/4l80e= not crap.

According to this wiki atricle, the 4l80e came out in '93 in the vans.

So, if your van is original AND over drive, it could very well be a 700r4. Which seems odd behind a 454...:doah:

Also-

A 7.4 liter V8 (230 hp (172 kW), 385 lb·ft (522 N·m) @2400 rpm) was exclusive to the G30.

It's a 1 ton van if the 454 is original.

Keep the TH350, see how long it lasts. You've already got money into it and it's already in the truck. Take it easy and you might get a good long life span out of it.

Ultimately, you'd want a TH400 for a more permanent solution or 4L80 if you want OD.
