I decided if I was going to get new boots before my big trip I had better do it now. My old, broken in, and well traveled boots were a heavy (57 oz) pair of Vasques. They were sturdy and comfortable, but did I mention they were heavy? I've considered ditching them for a while, but they have served me so well I've been reluctant to.
Today I made up my mind to see what was out there. I read a bunch of spec sheets and reviews, then headed over to REI. After trying on a half dozen different pair I decided to go with a pair of Keen Voyageurs. The fit is great, with a wide toe box & good arch support, and they are light (33 oz). It almost felt like I switched to a pair of running shoes. They are not waterproof, but here in the South I decided breathablity was more important. They have the toe guard, similar to Keen's sandals. I think for what I'm planing, they are going to be great. If not, I still have enough time to try one more pair.
I went out for a quick walk with my daughter and the dogs. Since it was dark and raining we just did a quick 2 mile loop through the neighborhood. One of the things I wanted to know was what kind of traction they had on wet asphalt. I got my answer on that- no slips. I was also pleasantly surprised to find my socks totally dry when I got home. I'm sure if I spent all day in the rain they would have been wet, but for a short time in a steady, but light, rain they were fine.
