**NEW** Can OEM TBI Feed a 400??? ** NEW**

FYI

$500/pair pro toplines

From the picture though, I see the Vortec intake bolt pattern, which may mean they require the raised runner intake, even if you can request them in the "old" intake bolt pattern.

Still worth asking IMO. "Stock for stock" those heads have better components than Vortecs.

Score!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Using your link I found these: P/T 76cc Torkers, 2.020/1.600" I/E vlaves & P/T 76cc Torkers, 1.940/1.500" I/E valves , both for $529.95/pr!

Are 2 & 1.6" I/E valves too big for 400 cubes with a mild, TBI friendly cam? If I run too big of a valve, won't that kill vaccuum just like high lift, long duration cam?

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

the link you reference is 529 each the fine print says min 2 pieces if you click on add to cart and look at total its like 1100.

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

I noticed that... I was hoping the just meant they had to be ordered in pairs of two, as in 1(ea) left side and 1(ea) right side... Who the hell needs two sets of the same head!?!?!? /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

Fred from Competition Products e-mailed me back and said they are sold by the pair and the price is as posted, $529.95. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif No requirement to buy two sets. Must be a glitch in the web page /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

Hmmmm, gives me an idea or two....

I kind of wish they had the heart shaped combustion chambers instead of the older fashioned wedge style....

My valve guides are worn on the 350. All I would need to do when the 400 goes in is drill the steam holes, same as you....

I would go with the bigger valves, personal preference....

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

Where did you see that they don't have the fast burn style chambers? I just looked quickly, can't find any info on that.

If they don't have fastburn chambers, I'd be a lot less likely to get them FWIW. The chambers are at least half, if not more, of the reason that the Vortec heads are so good.

Flow is one thing, efficient combustion is another.

Re: Can OEM TBI Feed a 400???

Isn't there a jig for drilling those steam holes? I remember an article in CHP or Car Craft called "The Drill" and I think it made reference to a jig setup to properly locate the holes.

Anyone got any input on the optimum valve size for a high torque, low-to-mid RPM 400sbc? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

What size cam? You can get by with a set of 1.94" intake heads but to make some serious power you can't get the flow out of them. 2.02's are best if the motor is built pretty good. I made the mistake of using stock heads. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'd say the biggest TBI friendly grind I could get, which is, I'm sure relatively mild. I probably wouldn't consider running 2.020" intake valves on a low RPM, hi-torque 350, but the bigger 400 can use a little more air due to the larger displacement. It's either 1.94 / 1.50" or 2.02 / 1.60" intake / exhaust valve. I just don't want to loose any low-end power with the 2.02" valves
