Clutch

I did landscaping for a bit after the USAF. We took the dump truck clutches to a local clutch rebuilder.

Re: Clutch

A rig that size might have a 13 inch clutch,or possibly a dual disc setup.I love the style of the 60-66 trucks.A guy I used to set up next to at a swap meet had a factory camper C-60 truck very similar to yours, his had a 427 tall deck factory in it(wouldnt run when he bought it,thought it needed a timing chain, but it had a factory gear drive cam in it!-turned out to be the drive gear on the distributor had sheared the roll pin, throwing it out of time). It could be the original rear end went out in yours and someone put in a 2 speed, and left it disconnected,if there is no means of shifting it in the cab.Our local dpw still has a few golden oldies like yours in the fleet of dump trucks they plow and sand with,I used to sell them those clutch discs that look like a fan blade with disc brake pads on them--you cant "ride" those type of clucthes much, they engage rather abrubtly, but they outlast all the other types under heavy loads, something you may want to consider, since you will be loading the truck to capacity. I wish you luck on your move--did you say your moving to NH?--if so welcome to New England, the most expensive place to live in the US,hope you brought your wallet!. /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

The 348 and 409 would have some very distinctive valve covers Greg...they look nothing like the newer BBC's. If it looks like a newer big block it probably is.

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

409s can be quite desirable. They are "rare"(not as rare as the price and demand for them seems) and capable of some good power. But as stated thats either a 427 or a 366. 366s well they sucks in my opinion. They are a big block, good torque but thats that really. Defientally don't think you will get good mileage cause its a 366 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. I'd lean towards a 366 more than a 427, just look for the block casting numbers. Simple just like any other Chevy to my knowledge, scrape the gunk that I am sure is built up right behind the driver side head and go with it.

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

The T/D 366 & 427's have the same length stroke as the passenger car BBC 396/402/427's do . The 366's had a small bore and both T/D motors came with four ring pistons and a 10.2 deck height but the stroke was the same 3.76" although they were steel cranks and 7/16" rods in the T/D's .
Not trying to be picky by any means just thought I would make sure good info was posted .

Hee Hee Hee......you make me laugh. Sorry, but comparing NH cost of living to Northern California is hilarious. When was the last time you spent $2.60 for a gallon of gas......

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

The engine in this truck is most definately NOT a 366 or 427 tall deck engine. I was with Greg when he looked at this truck and I spotted the fact of it being a BBC and also took notice that it wasn't a tall deck. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I will have to look at it again but my guess is someone swapped a 396 in place of whatever the truck originally came with.

I would have to agree. That intake doesn't look near wide or tall enough to be a tall deck motor. That, and the tall deck engines have different water necks on them. Run the casting number behind the driver side head, or the intake casting number. It will point you in the right direction and let you know more about the motor. I'd replace the ignition, rebuild the rad, update to a modern air filter and do a major front end inspection before heading on a 3000 mile trip. Grease the hell out of everything as well

FYI- cranks run 366, 396-402 and 427 "pass" the larger cranks will fit either 427 truck engines or 454s.

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

I must have missed something along the way. Nothing was said of an engine swap but everyone's talkin about big blocks? Chevy didnt come out with the big block until '65, whats with that? Now I know most of you were around then and I wasnt but I'm most curious, that truck is prety cool.

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

You are correct, the BBC did not come out until 1965, I have already told Greg this. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Clutch

I havent paid 2.60 a gallon yet--maybe tommorrow! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gifIts about 2.10 a gallon now,and rising daily.
But dont foget heating oil--you'll need a lot more of that in NH than near San Jose.I dont know about NH real estate, but in MA in my area you need 250,000 bucks for a "starter house"(read:needs roof, furnace, rotted sills replaced, etc)located in a drug infested ghetto like town on a 1/4 acre lot--a nice house on an acre or more in a good neighborhood will set you back 400 to 500 thousand bucks! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gifAnd property tax on our 2 acre lot is nearly 4000 a year! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
Welcome to New England anyway!--hope your new life here is a good one, hope you have a good job already lined up! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

If you are going to take I-70 past kansas city, let me know and you can meet me at a Sams gas station on the way. The other day i paid 1.89 for the wifes car (7 G honda), the day after i paid 1.99 at the same place for the SUB (35G).

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

The clutch you will have to pull out and bring into a good parts house to have it matched up. There were too many options to know what it is for sure (and it may not even be original since the motor/tranny have been replaced at one time).

Sounds like you are missing the button that mounts to the shifter lever to actuate the 2 spd rear axle. Look under the cab on the driver side frame rail. You should find a set of vacuum lines running off of the motor to a vacuum switch. This is where the speedo and vacuum lines are switched for the 2 different gear ratios. An electric cable should run off of this to a switch mounted on the gear selector.

I might have some shop manuals I can sell you for that truck, I'll dig thru my collection tonight and see what I can find. On the subject of when the big block was first offered, the 348/409 was first offered in C40 and larger trucks in 1962 (last year of the independant front suspension in those big trucks too). Later to be replaced with the 366/427. I have some dealer/sales brochures I collected for my website with all the available options from 1960-66 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

once you get where you are going, remove the box, flat bed it and use it as a tow rig.

nothing better than towing a first gen with a first gen(kinda)

Re: \"NEW\" Chevy purchase......check out the pic!! ... and answer a few Q\'s

I'll thorw in my $.02. That looks like a single resivisor master cylinder. If it is, find a dual before your trip. It would suck to blow a brake line and loose all you brake fluid (ask me how I know).

BTW, cool truck.
