Just picked up a 1986 four door dually 2wd for a tow rig and sell my motorhome for a cab over camper!

It's got an oil cooler like my 90 Suburban and 90 Blazer but no tranny cooler? It's got a fan on the side I want to mount the tranny cooler. But what operates the fan?

have you traced the hoses on the cooler to see if it actually is an oil cooler? it may be an added on trans cooler

The cooler on the right side of the picture (left side of truck) is diffenatly an oil cooler. The lines run to an adapter under the oil filter.

The fan has nothing behind it. I plan on putting a trans cooler behind it. But what runs the fan? It looks to be wired from factory, but what turns it on and when?

the PO probably has the fan hooked up to the AC system, when the compressor turns on, the fan does too.

That's actually the factory fan for this truck, it is suppose to be mounted in front of the oil cooler, someone swapped it.

put it back in front of the oil cooler, and it should have a temp switch mounted somewhere for it to turn on.

then mount a new trans cooler in there and call it good.

Thread hi jacker!!! :eek1:

Wish I had paid my membership so I could see your picture... :doah:

I looked long and hard to find this four door dually for $2400. 454, new turbo 400, new radiator, 104k miles, origanal owner, front and rear seats covered since new, undercoated since new, very well cared for since new, no rust!!! Paint has some fade, one dent but other than that real nice.

The fan kicks on if the engine reaches a set temp. Its like an aux cooling fan. Doesnt do much, barely moves any air. Got one on my '86 1 ton.

I could see no way this fan could ever fit with the oil cooler on the same side. Just won't fit and none of the holes line up...

That's exactly what I did. Mounted the tranny cooler to the AC condensor and then reinstalled the fan and it fit's perfectly! :D
