new england wheelin trip CHECK OUT THE PICS AND VIDS ON LAST FEW PAGES

well, i opened up my rearend today, i didnt completely drain it, or inspect it, but the oil was grayish and real sludgy, and i felt alot of metal shavings on the inside on the bottom, boy that gear oil stinks!!...it doesnt matter if its toast or not, because i`m still puttin the posi in, it would actually be better if it werent, but from the what i could see, the gears looked ok besides the metal shavings, but i really havent a clue, one thing i notice while i was under there was that it looks like gear oil was coming out of the diff vent tube, as it was all over the place where the outlet of the tube is, and on the gas tank skid pan, i just threw the cover back on because i couldnt stand the smell......just letn you know what i did/found....think it mightve been grindin, well it almost sounded like a wind up toy, except different, if that makes sense, and when i would slow down it would make the noise again and then a clunk, and it only made it (while over 45 or so) while i had my foot on the pedal, but when i was goin 30 it would do it when i slowed down a little, or even let off the pedal for like 15 or 30 seconds....the reason why i dont think it was my tranny, was because it shifted fine...

I say that you should check for play in the rear end by setting the e-brake and the tranny in nuetral try to rotate the drive shaft back and forth. If you have excesive play or you can duplicate the clunking, the rear end is your problem.

BTW, gear oil smells nasty, you just have to get used to it. I like to use gloves so my hands don't smell like it for a while. Plus old gear oil smells worse. Go back out there and drain the rest and it helps if you wipe out the inside with a rag to get rid of as much sludge as possible. With the amount of water that got into your diffs it is not surpising to see stuff come out of the vent tube. You should take the vent hose off and make sure it isn't restricted from sludge. Take pictures of what the ring and pinion gears look like a long with the spider gears and post em up so we can give you a second opinion.
Good luck with it! :)

when i get a chance i will, or i`ll just have dave look at it on saturday, but right now i have to start studying for finals:mad:

why do you think it was all filmy and sludgy?

Well because that is way it is when you get mud/water into your axels. Gross, I know but I really should be done.

It asks me to do the same thing. I have to click ok and wait awhile while it loads and can watch the whole thing in its entirety.

*UPDATE* Time to see the Jeep damage

So as you know my friend hydro-locked his Jeep. Turns out he blew a connecting rod on his #1 cylinder. He has his engine out and will soon get the new one he has in. But check out the damage to the block and oil pan:

I went back there today to check out what it looks like with all this rain. I kinda blew through it in 2wd but I heard my exhaust go under water in one part and my exhaust is pretty high up. The sand pit is perfect conditions for donuts :D I wouldn't worry about getting stuck, I'd worry about water locking the engine. I'd recoment to have a spare air filter and spark plugs with you because the rain is just going to carry on like this until Saturday night. :D

 :haha:
