So it is time for another emmissions test for the good state of CO. Well it just so happens i had to customize the exhaust (cut off behind the cat) on my 89 K5 last winter when it turned on me and started lighting fires in the truck. I guess it is time to redo the exhaust. I just started looking into it and cannot decide if i want to go all the way from the headers back, one pipe or two. Does any one have any recomendations on parts? Like everyone i have a budget but would be willing to spend a little more if it was worth it.

Thanks for any advice

Depends what you consider budget.

You could get some flex pipe, catco cats and some dynamax muffs and run tailpipes all the way back.

Or

You could go to muff shop and have it done. Ive got true duals. It costs me about 400-500bux to run pipes, install catco cats, flowmaster muffs and tailpipes straight out the back. Having it done by a shop and done right is worth it. If you use cheap materials, expect to replace stuff more often.

I say single w/headers. If you've got access to a welder, I believe you can buy complete exhaust systems to do yourself, and it MIGHT save you some money. You could always call local and ask them what they would charge to do single 3" back from the headers you'd put in.

If looking for power, headers are way too big of a gain to ignore if doing exhaust.

The Hedman Elites are a good header, and not too highly priced for being ceramic coated. Just need to get the right ones. If you can search in this forum, you'll find the Hedman header thread, where a shorter one that eliminates the problems others (like me) had was found, and their part number given.

make sure you get aluminized tubing for exhaust it looks better and last longer than standard and not that much more.

i bought the dynomax exhaust pipe kit for my truck and was easy to put on except i should have ordered the header kit instead of the manifold , i put headers on it after the kit wouldn't work with my manifolds:doah:. im running glass packs for mufflers.

id say go headers wwith duals, i created my own duals with my welder and didnt look too bad though i did not put cats on it, pueblo county doesnt have emissions so i lucked out, do it right the first time it wont come back to haunt you and i love the sound of true duals.. just my .02

I bought Hedman headers and a Hooker dual exhaust kit. The hooker dual kit was very nice, had mandrel bends (unlike the dynomax) and would have fit perfect if I had bought the correct headers (they hang too low and rub the front shackles).

THose are probably the correct headers, just ill fiting. I had the same issue with my Hookers. Muff shop just used a big ass pry bar. now they dont rub the shackle anymore. LoL..

Right, pretty much. But I remember reading one of the threads on here that listed a hedman header that was a different # than mine. They had the collector tucked higher up in the rails, which would have worked better for me.

Oh, and I went with the Hedmans over the Hookers for a couple reasons (In case anyone cares). The Hedmans have a larger collector and they also have a ball-type flange with no gasket to blow out. It also allows for some flex.
