New exhaust now killer exhaust drone!

I have the crazy plan in my head to do a "dual stock exhaust". Think the original exhaust, except mirrored on the driver side. In addition, I would do an H or X pipe. I think that it would go to nearly double the exhaust flow, but still keep it super quiet

Ok here's Dynomax's answer and I want to see what you guy's all think? They are willing to set me up with a different muffler (Dynomax VT) and the adapters to make it fit the pipes. Here's my concern... the pipes are 4" in and 4" out and the biggest VT muffler they offer is 3" in and 3" out. Is that going to be a huge choke down point in the system? The truck has two 3" head pipes into dual cat's and those pipes converge into a single 4" the rest of the way out, now i'm going to be putting a 3" muffler in the middle of that 4" section. Dynomax also offered to let me return the complete system as well but I like the fit, hate the noise!

What size was your stock muffler outlet, was it 3 inch like mine..?..I cant see it holding back too much but then again the kits muffler is a wide open design....so that's a real toss up. The fitament of this kit is so nice, I haven't seen any others that look that good. Are they sending you the adapters and the muffler for free..?.....id try it out.

The stock system was 3 inch but the muffler had 2 inlets and 2 outlets. They are going to send me a stainless "valve" muffler and the adaptors but I have to pay up front and they will send a call tag for the return of the other muffler and when they get it back I get a check back.
The bad part of the deal is those adapters (4" to 3") are not stainless just aluminized.

Man. That's a tough call. Is there any other option? If not, probably best to try it out. Or else learn to live with the drone.

I was thinking tho about it a little more, if you do put the new muffler on and don't like it then what..?...can you still return the system since your not satisfied..? Id hate to be stuck with it, maybe try the muffler out they send you and if you don't like it send it back then you can still return the system.

Well, with such a promising offer, I see that you are better positioned than before ("as is" is no good anyway).

If I were you, I'd rather go ahead and live with the hopefully improved sound, even if it's on the expense of some performance loss, which I doubt to be much (due to the reduction from 4 to 3 in).

To me, you are going thru one way & irreversible action.....so, you may go ahead fixing the new system then please share the results, at the soonest (when you are done hopefully with a smile). Quieter sound means better life for all, you and neighbors.

Yep I have been nosing around and found that Flowmaster has a muffler that will fit the system, so there is another option but that would be "out of my pocket" for that muffler. I haven't had any luck with Flowmaster stuff fitting right that's why I went with the Dynomax system. Problem is nobody makes a "quite" muffler with 4" pipes.

If its the same muffler from flowmaster as in the 2500hd kit then stay away from it, I owned it before and im sure its louder. The muffler is huge too..lol. What about magnaflow..?...edit nevermind I just looked and its exactly the same style, but its like 7 inches round. I wonder if that would be any better for you.

Yep talked to a few people and the same remarks, stay away from the Flowmaster! Couple folks on here even mentioned short life span for their products. I went ahead and ordered the 3" VT muffler from Dynomax to give it a try I guess if it don't work out I could go back stock? One guy suggested I try Gale Banks and get one of his mufflers for a gas motorhome... hum, never thought about that  his stuff is top notch and it comes at a premium too!

Heres the truck i'm working on...

Good luck with the VT. Like I said above I tried two different sets with different lot numbers (i.e. made at different times) and they all sounded like they had a handful of marbles bouncing around inside. If they actually worked as advertised they would be great.

Current update!!

Yep as stated above the VT mufflers are crap! Yes the truck was indeed quieter but it had this bizzare pulsing sound like a turbine starving for fuel? There was no rattle and I bet on smaller cubes it would work. Looks like the VT is going back. I have a local muffler shop getting me a stainless resonator that fits in place of the tip. It looks interesting but I only seen it in a catalog but he swears by them and can even get it in 4 inch pipe. We'll see how that works...

Oops! But never mind, good gain comes after some pain....surely you've gone thru good series of lessons that made you a smarter-buyer, helping to know what fits best.

So, we will wait for ur feedback, as I also want to follow the same as ur practice to deaden the sound!

Final update!! After a long trip towing the 5th wheel this exhaust has got to go! Going back to stock system except this time in full stainless. However the folks at Dynomax are great people to work with and they are going to take the system back under their "safe and sound" warranty.

I just solved my drone problem on my duramax by putting a 41" donaldson muffler on it. Man it is nice to finally be able to talk at 70mph.
Granted it was fun around town but any long trips made me want to crash into a ditch.

Its crazy how a few years ago loud is what I wanted..:haha:
