New front bumper

Time for me is usually a big constraint...which is why I very rarely build stuff for others. It usually ends up becoming unfun trying to get stuff done in a timely manner.

I'd hate to commit to building another one only to look bad for how long it would take me. Right now I'm on vacation...I have one more week to get my rear bumper done, front and rear bumpers for Stan (BigDummy89K5, you met him at Blazer Bash) and the better part of two family cages. We'll see how far we get...but I'm not holding my breath.

nice... i want to do something similar with my front bump at some point. btw, any consideration about maybe adding a support that runs from the outter nodes (the ones furthest from the winch) back to the frame at a 45-ish angle? Factory bumpers have a bracket that bolts to the frame back there, could make for a really easy add-on. If ya hit something really solid (or not so solid but moving fast!) on the outter edge of the bumper, that would prolly help a lot.

just an idea, awesome bumper! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I think there is a point of diminishing returns or even just creating a worse problem by adding more. If I go back to the frame (aside from my TSL eating the brace when stuffed) it could damage the frame much worse if I did hit something fast on the corner.

The factory bumpers were braced because they were very weak, this tube is much stronger.

That's my thinking anyways. Mostly I just don't have hardly any useable room to brace that area because of the low lift and big tires (same set up you have I believe.)

Those bars do run through the middle of my signal lights though. I may have to change that (the signal light location, not the bumper). They still seem easy to see though (they're pretty big)

Rene, if you change the turn signal lights you could weld a plate between the lower bars and use the 4" sealed beam lights like they use on big trucks/ trailers. They offer a version that has a clear back that would act as "rock lights" for the front axle at the same time.

sweet bumper but i still want your old front and rear bumpers /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

Sadly, they are both residing in the scrap bin at work now... /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif They were both welded to the frame so they don't easily mount to another K5. The rear is also bent from that wreck in Portland in '01. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

bummer i really liked them /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif your new ones are sweet though great job on them /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

Very nice job Rene /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif I think I'm going to get the Bend Tech 3-D when it comes out /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif I've got a bender at work but waisting material and not getting the results that I want is something that has kept me from pursueing a cage and bumpers.

yeah, i hear ya. You're the pro fabricator guy, not me. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I see what you're saying about how the frame might get more tweaked... I guess what I was thinking is that a hard blow near the end of the bumper has some pretty serious lever-arm if the nearest part connected to the frame is at the frame-rails. If a support was added closer to the ends it seems like it would help alleviate that. Or, maybe it would just screw that part of the frame up... I dunno. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

very good point... when Im looking at my rig and thinking about how I want my bumper its usually sitting on flat ground with the 35s on there. I should mount the 39.5s, max out the suspension and THEN see what kind (if any!) clearance I have in that area....

So far the waste has been minimal...mostly when I start changing my design. What I really need to do is load the software on the computer at work.
