well, i went to pick up my truck from storage so i can do a little work on it over the weekend. when i got to storage, i fired her up and smelled gas, so i popped the hood. the clear plastic fuel filter and old lines were leaking all over the pass valve cover. looks like a hose clamp busted through a hose. so i ran to the auto parts store, purchased a new filter, new hose clamps, and some 3/8 fuel line. the old filter was nasty brown inside anyways.

well, got it all on, drove her about 12 miles home, and as i was pulling in my driveway, she died. wouldn't start so i popped the hood and noticed the filter was only about 10% full. finally got her to start but had to keep revving it to keep it alive. now that its in the driveway the filter will fill all the way up, but wont start or keep running unless i give her some gas.

i tried unscrewing my gas cap b/c i had some type of vapor lock in the tank on an old carb'd car.

also, the lines and filter are run exactly as it was before.

thanks!!!!

I would let the new filter completely dry and cut it open. My truck did the same and it would only run pretty much wide open. I had rust in the tank.:doah:

Doesn't the quadrajet have a filter in the inlet too.

Probably a cracked fuel line letting the gas drain back into the tank. I assume you have a mechanical fuel pump and when you bring the RPMs up it speeds the pump up.

Probably the rubber lines on top of the tank too, those are the worst!

well, the quadrajet is loooonnnng gone. it has an edelbrock carb on it, and yes, it has a mechanical fuel pump still. seemed to run great before i noticed the leak and replaced the line and filter today.

i just tried starting her since it's had a few hours to cool off. still wont start unless i give it gas, then it dies immediately after i let off the go pedal.

will do buddy. i will cut it open tomm morning. will there be obvious signs of rust?

now that you mention it, i topped off the tank right before i parked it last time, it was at right around a half tank.

it was idleing a little rough in gear as i was driving it back to storage.

As soon as you remove the filter let it sit over night it will he dry then cut it open and spread it and it will be obvious with rust particles.

quick question, it is a clear plastic filter. would i be able to see anything through the plastic? or do you think it does need to be cut open to see the inside.

also, im assuming if this is the case, then a new tank is in order. that sure is unfortunate as i was taking it to an offroad park next friday for my birthday.

thanks for all your help guys!!!!

i just pulled off the filter. it looks like fuel goes from the outside to the inside. I also have a picture of the old filter.....

first pic is the filter that i put on this afternoon.

second pic is the one that was on the truck from the PO

i did just walk into pep boys and the guy at the counter sent me towards the filters and we found one that looked just like the one i carried in with me. appears to be the same also.

Babaganoosh, thanks so much for you help. i gotta say, i hope your wrong, but i think your right. damn it.

Lol me to, I just want to save you the headache and hundreds of dollars I went through trying to fix it.

I dont know, that filter looks pretty clean to me..(unless that photo was taken before it was installed)..

"It wont start unless I give it some gas,and if I let off,it'll die"..
That sounds more like a large vacuum leak to me..if it was starving that bad for fuel,it shouldn't start at all,or have enough to rev up the engine.

Why does your truck have a ballast resistor?..still running points?.

That's the same filter I temporarily installed on a boat here to flush out the tank and keep an eye on the debris coming through from a badly rusted tank. It does flow from outside inward. You'll be able to see any rust particles in it if you have them.

How long did it sit in storage with a full tank of fuel? Gas starts to go bad after 6 months or so and will turn to varnish and start clogging up filters, fuel lines, and carb passages, it can also make valves in the heads stick and make love to the pistons then really bad things happen.
