Thinking about getting a new GM crate motor for my 91 K1500. Whole lot cheaper than buying new $40K truck. I can't believe they are still as cheap as they are. The price has not gone up much, if any, since I bought my last one 15 years ago. Anyway, my question is are there any drawbacks to getting the heavy duty L05 (for 8600 gvwr and up trucks) other than the shorter warranty and loss of a few horse power and a $100-$200 higher price tag? I understand the EGR (using my intake)and all accessories should bolt up with no problems. I tow a good bit with it and would like having the 4 bolt and torque peak a little lower in the rpm band. Thanks in advance.

If you're totally set on new, they are a good way to go.

If I was buying an engine, I'd look at a gen III or newer engine. Better heads, intake, roller cam, great factory fuel injection, strong bottom end. They are cheap/easy to find everywhere but we get ours from Pacific Fabrication.

Having a 4 bolt block is nothing more than bragging rights unless you're going boosted. Torque is always good to have down low for a tow rig however.

It's definitely a good way to go if you want low price, the peace of mind from a new engine, and minimal hassle putting it in. I got the cheapo 350 SBC, threw in a Comp 4x4 cam and some Vortec heads, and I'm pretty happy with it.
