new grill concept

Did you have to modify the outer grill in that picture? I'm still interested in an aluminum one in the next few months.

no, that grill is built to fit perfectly with a stock outer grill.
Unfortunalty i cant show it mounted with a good outer grill as i dont have one. The outer in the pic is hacked up to take a tube grill. (i bought the truck that way)

If i work out this trade and end up having to build another i will probably go aluminum this time and do a clear ano on it. who knows.

if you missed the thread, this is one i made for igor out of stainless, then he sent if for a polish. it looks fantastic.

I think that we all agree about how cool, sweet, amazing, (insert whatever exclaimation you want) of a grill you came up with!!! I still think you could sell them! Would kit form get around any legal crap? I hope you can build'em & sell'em.

I don't think there's anything "legal" to worry about...

Generally the licensing problems are for the tailgates that have "CHEVROLET" embossed on them, or for the '69-70 Outer grilles that also say "CHEVROLET" across the middle.

Selling a solid replacement for the flimsy, plastic inner grille would be awesome...... and I will repeat my request for a version to match the '69-70 style. I'll take mine in aluminum to save weight. :deal:

Cool!!! I didn't know if there were any concerns legally, that's good to know. Now how do we order?? Does it help to say pretty please!!??

finally picked up an outer grill that was not hacked up for a tube grill. its not the greatest but at least all the pieces are there. it appears this is the final design. next step is to make an aluminum one.

looks good... i do love that cowl you did... props...

Those are smooth. Makes me want to give up my wannabe billet grill.

i have an aluminum one coming soon. Its programmed and sitting in line to be cut.
The problem is our laser are so overloaded it could be a few weeks. Anyway. this probably means im selling the one seen below.
(powder coated steel)

Right on...... Aluminum will be weigh better (<- get it? haha) :)

Now all I need to do is bug you for the '69-'70 style insert.

Once that's available I'll be a happy camper.

:deal:

I will second that. The grill is bad ass, just needs a cut out in the center :chainsaw:

tig welders - I need a lil help

All new Aluminum grill is ready for weld but i dont know how to weld aluminum.

Here's what i have.
Lincoln SP135T with 75% argon/25% carbon dioxide and ER5356 .03 wire.
I need to make this setup work.
All suggestion will be taken for consideration and very much appriciated.

Looks good! Not sure on the welding tips, I thought aluminum (or maybe it's stainless?) requires straight argon. I'm guessing your mostly doing hot tack welds and not long beads?

yes, it just a tack. it doesn't take much to get it to stay together.
the one in the pic isn't welded at all. it kinda holds itself together.

You need pure Argon gas
Aluminum Wire
New uncontaminated drive rollers
New uncontaminated gun liner
Stainless wire brushes to clean the metal
Patience

Aluminum is tricky. I've only done it on one project. The welds tend to be really black and sooty, though you can clean a lot of that back off with the wire brushes. Obviously you are going to want to practice a lot first and if it were me I'd try to do all the welding on the back side of the grill where it will show the least. Maybe just lay a bead at each intersection of the parts instead of trying to run long beads inside those rectangles....

100% of the welding is on the back. even on the steel ones its all welded where it cant be seen.

I doubt ill buy anything extra....i do already have the alminum wire... but im not gonna spend the money on the pure argon so if i can weld it, I'll think of somthing else.

i would love to have a dxf file of that to cut on my waterjet for the 71 that i am building.......

pm me if you are interested in selling the file
