Hi y'all. This looks like a great forum, but I'm kinda mad at you all already. I've been drooling over lots of your K5s, and it looks like you're all about to cost me a lot more than the $25 to join the forum. :D

I found a cool '79 K5 that's been mostly rebuilt already, and I'm close to making a deal to buy it. I'm gonna need to haul it home if that happens, and I can't find a trailer wide enough. It has 35x12.50 tires on it, so it's about 84" from tire to tire - too wide for 6.5' wide trailers.

I'm in Abilene, Texas and the Blazer is in Red Oak (south of DFW). Does anyone here know of a place I could rent a trailer or where I could hire a car hauler? I'm still looking, but I thought maybe someone here might be able to help.

Thanks in advance!

Slap some rollers on it, stock sized tires. Or run up to Avoca and find someone with a lowboy to haul it. I sold my '89 Cummins to a guy up there in December, tons of farmers with wide trailers for hauling cotton and tractors.

At least you're not mad at me. There's no way you would be drooling over my old trail rat!!! Good luck with getting the new rig home.

We put a K5 body/frame on a trailer using the plastic furniture dollies you can rent from u-haul. They are actually quite stout, and we only used two. Use a floor jack on the front end to get it over the wheelwells, done.

A few years back, I loaded mine on a U-Haul Trailer for a short distance and it is on 35x12.5 tires. We had to load it backwards as the front is 1"(?) wider than the rear. Also, the trailers fender was built to be driven over on one side.

I noticed U-Haul has at least two different versions of car-haulers a few weeks ago when I rented one to tow another car. You may want to measure a few different ones there. Some have a fold down rt fender and some have a reinforced fender. Also, don't tell them you are towing a lifted truck or a fullsize at all unless you have a big 1-ton.

Duh! Thank you. :waytogo: The seller might still have the stock wheels/tires. If not, I can probably pick some up fairly cheap.

Does anybody know for sure if a '79 Blazer with stock wheels and tires would fit on a trailer that's 6.5' wide?

i have a 6.5 wide car hauler.
my truck is an 80, with 3/4 ton axles.

here's my blazer on the trailer.

the wheels are rollers, and they are actually stock dodge 2500hd wheels. (same 8 lug bolt pattern!)

it went on backwards because of my garage, not really because it had to, although the rear axle IS narrower.

Awesome. Thanks. I figured it would fit, but I wanted to find out for sure before I buy wheels/tires and drive 3 hours to put them on and find out. :D

I appreciate the help.

The one I'm about to buy has 1/2 ton axles (6-lug hubs). I figure I won't have any trouble finding some cheap but useful wheels and tires to fit.

Older Toyota 4x4 rims have the same 6 lug pattern and should fit over the hubs..should be able to find some cheap..

I dont know if GM ever had space saver spares with 6 lug rims but if they did they would be ideal for transport purposes ...and junkyards practically give those away..

What's left to make it road worthy?

On a side note cool to see a guy from Abilene. I lived there for a short while while going to ACU. My sister graduated from there as well a few years back.

It doesn't need a lot. Gauges need to be connected (cables are there), needs an inspection sticker, needs a horn button so it can pass inspection. I could drive it without that and just hope I don't get a ticket for no inspection sticker, but mostly it would be easier for me to travel the 3 hours to the truck by myself with a trailer as my son has football practice and my wife needs to be in a different town this weekend for some stuff with her family.

When were you at ACU? I graduated from there as well. My daughter will be a freshman there this fall.

Shane hit me up if you need help hauling that thing. I live in NW Fort Worth and have a 6'11"x20' trailer and a srw 1-ton that won't have any trouble hauling that. As long as you cover fuel, diesel is expensive these days!

Thanks for the offer, brother. If we don't get to drive it home today I'll give you a shout.

Well, we came home without a K5 and with our money still in our pocket. The Blazer has had a lot of work done to it on all the major stuff - engine, tranny, body/paint, wheels/tires.... All of that is good. But the bad is that NOTHING electrical works. The wiring is a jumbled mess. I decided to pass, as I'm afraid it would cost more than I'd want to spend to get all the lights and gauges working so that it could be a daily driver. I don't have time to pull all the wiring harnesses and everything out and redo it myself right now. My son just started football for this fall, and it will be deer season soon. I'd have to hire somebody to do all that work, and I'm guessing it would take at least $1,500-2,000 to get that done. Maybe I'm off on my guess. What do y'all think it would take to have someone completely redo everything electrical (exterior lights, interior lights, electric window/locks, windshield wipers, stereo, all the gauges in the dash, the heater blower, etc....)?

I'll keep looking for one that is good enough for a daily driver now that needs cosmetic work that could be done in bits and pieces later.
