when installing a harmonic balancer do you use a new bolt?

Depends, on application old gen1 chevy no, unless it's damaged. New ls engines yes.
Why not replace on the squarebodies? I have a bad oil leak on the timing cover I'm trying to fix. So I'll need to remove this bolt. I can tell it has been removed previously.
The difference is on how far the bolt is loaded. If you don't load a bolt past the yield limit and it is not a fatigue cycle critical application, the bolts will last forever without damage or corrosion.
