My 85' 6.2 sat in a barn for a good 10 years or so before i got it. I got it all running and driving, but it has a "miss" at idle. I'm not sure its an actual miss, but that is the best i can describe it. It only is at an idle though. I put new injectors in thinking this was the problem but it did not fix it. Another thing is i have noticed quite a bit more white smoke with my new injectors at start up. Anybody? Thanks

Make sure your lift pump is working properly, my engine starts to miss and smoke at idle if I forget to plug it in. It starts a bit harder too

Timing maybe?...Mine was doing the same thing...I put in new injectors, bumped timing to every possible position...and mine ended up being 2 cracked heads:doah:...i'm sure yours is simple...my "BUDDY-(F*cker)" put the heads on there cracked when he owned it:mad:

I guess i don't really understand how it could be the lift pump, so i might just have to tinker with the timing.

I was thinking the same way, the lift pump would be starving it not overly pumping.
I would check the timing or suspect bad rebuild on the injectors.

I hope it isnt a bad set of rebuilt injectors :doah:. I got them from a diesel place in Wisconsin and they are all Bosch shells and guts. Lets hope its just the timing.

sounds to me, too, like the timing is just too retarded. rotate the pump toward the drivers side a bit and see if that helps.

I was wondering what way to rotate the pump, thanks. Its raining outside now so probably this weekend i'll get in the garage and tinker with it.

Ok, so i tinkered with the timing and got the smoke to go away except for a quick puff right when it first fires at start up (which is normal for a 6.2). I still have a rough idle though. Being that i have a recently rebuilt injector pump, new injectors and had to adjust the timing to get it not smoke like a freight train i think i am dealing with a worn out timing chain? Any opinions? Its the orginal timing chain and has 116,000 miles on it.

Crack open each injector line right at the injector while the engine is running and figure out which cylinder(s) is/are miss firing. That'll at least give you a place to start troubleshooting.

yes, i just recently put a whole new fuel filter system on. Its a Fuel Manager by Stanadyne (i think). The rough idle isnt terribly noticable, only if you listen to the exhaust and concentrate on the rythm you can hear it. Since its not affecting the way it runs going down the road and doesn't stall out or anything, i'm just going to leave it for a while and eventually put a new timing chain set on.
