looking to get 2" or 2.5" leafs all around and new shocks..been told to not buy a lift kit that i would get better leafs if i buy them direct myself then match the shocks i want..any recommendations of where to get leafs..

was thinking around $800 for leafs..was looking at rough country 2.5"lift then was going to add my own rear springs but seen so many bad reviews about rough country that it scared me..most my 4wheeling is driving beach to surf fish and the hills and trails to hunt ..but id like to keep it a good riding rig

I am a huge fan of custom designed springs! I put up with a bad ride for way too long before I got ORD fronts.
On the rear, I would look into a short shackle flip. I think that there are options. And get good shocks!!

your budget = tuff country

will be just fine for you .

and then go the extra on bilstein shocks.

you can get piece by piece shoping around . . . . or 1 stop shop all correct for your rig here . http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog.htm

and as you said rough country is NOT the best at all on our trucks . the ride = DUMP truck empty quality.

yep was going bilstein for sure..put them on my 2500 and my old truck..worth the money best riding shocks ive tired

SkyJackers are the best off the shelf springs. Tuff Country's are good budget oriented springs. Of course custum are the best.

This ^^

Somewhere on the 'net there's a spring rate chart that shows Tuff Country has the best rates for an "off the shelf spring". If you're just looking to keep a nice ride in a part time wheeler I don't think I'd spend the money for custom springs, they're cool but you may never use what you paid for. Plus, custom front springs alone will eat your budget and you'll still need to lift the rear, add hardware and maybe / maybe not get some steering parts.

Custom leafs from ORD are less than 800 for the fronts

just do it right the first time and be done

if you want my friend is taking off his rough country 4" front leafs and putting on the ORD's you can have the old ones if you want
There is a reason that he is taking them off...

And my thoughts were custom front springs, shackle flip on the back. Since the budget for leaves was $800. Yes that would be over budget slightly, and shocks extra.
But I would bet that most people say that off the shelf is fine , because they haven't experienced custom. I used to have Tuff-country.... they went to scrap metal...

Overall, I think I agree with @sweetk30 . It seems you offroad as a means to go do stuff, not simply to "go wheeling".

I have a rough country lift. It's stiff but not that terrible (unless you utilize the quad shocks, at that point the tires are all you got for cushion). However, I went from driving my suburban 20 miles a week to 20 miles a day, and now I find myself wanting something softer. If I had $800, I would gather a little more and try for custom fronts and rear blocks, then as time goes on I'd do rear springs, then steering stuff to maximize the customs up front.

I've only driven on RC, so in reality I don't know jack...this is all based on reading, lol. I want customs, but in reality I bet I'd be completely satisfied with TC and better shocks. I wish I could experience them all before I decide.

If you only do mild to moderate trails to fish and hunt, the tuff country seems best IMO, but if you want a progressive build to maximize your rig's capabilities, might as well spend it on customs.

Hope that helps

Awhile back I talked with @Stephen @ORD about shorter springs and if I remember correctly they can't do a spring with less than 4" of lift. This is due the construction of the spring pack with the multiple thin leaves.

If I was looking at off the shelf I'd look at Tuff-Country or BDS.

I would agree with this as well.

all I can say is I have removed a lot of rough country stuff.

I did a members truck here @manchildau65 truck this summer .

we removed a full 6" all spring with 52" rears rough country kit . swapped in a new set of 4"hd tuff country front with zero rate 1.5" forward / rear was 22-547 gm part# rear springs 56" long and pop them in the rear . all springs got a set of ord greasable bushings .

lets just say he LOVES it night and day over the old cheep a$$ rough country kit.

EDIT INFO : we used yellow Monroe shocks from advanced auto for a 99-up super duty 4x4 . we have to install the stamped steel ford shock towers at this point to help front flex as the shocks are limiting them now on stock setup .

to tell you how much I play with off the shelf stuff that my mother even complemented on how well my trucks ride over stock or even new vehicles .

at some point I would LOVE to try a set of ord / alcan custom built springs.

Did he use the same shocks? Which ones?

I think the biggest problem with trying to convey the difference in how each spring and shock combo feels, is the fact there is no "seat of the pants " gauge! So no way to tell the numbers!

We can go as low as you want. The problem is that near stock height, there isn't much room for bump travel so your soft spring doesn't do much good when you're into the bump stops all the time.

2" of lift works great and we do that one a lot for people that don't want much lift but want to help ride quality (my pickup is 2-1/2" springs).

i got 32' on it now ..shocks got to be replaced no matter what. they or the orginals..thinking 2'' to 2.5'' with 33'' would look good and little extra clearance"beef it up a little" but keep a good ride..superlift had a all spring lift with shocks in my budget range.. any reveiws on them?
