I'm new to the 4x4 community, but I've got tons of experience with late model GM performance cars(LS1, LT1). I currently have a 2001 Corvette, which is part of the reason I'm looking to pick up a late 80s/early 90s Sub. Don't get me wrong, I love my car, but mods are soooo expensive. I'm finally at a stage in life where I have a garage, and am looking for something to wrench on. I'm sick of the "Corvette Tax" with $1500 headers and $500 water pumps. I'm looking for something I can drive in the pismo dunes(only 15 minutes away from me), go muddin, take to Tahoe, tailgate at Raiders games, tow other toys, and never have to drive my Vette in the rain again(my only other vehicle is an old Ninja).

I've done a lot of research the past month to at least narrow down what I'm looking for, and found that CK5 is the place to do my homework.

I'd love to have an ol' dirty 'burb like these:

I looked at the above Sub over the weekend, and found out the owner is indeed a CK5 member. Very cool.

This white one is too pretty to go off-roadin' in, but sure is a looker:

So I'll go ahead and ask my first newb question:

After some preliminary reasearch I've decided that I'd like a 88-91 Suburban V2500 with the 454. I believe some had the 4L80E. It can be tough to find these old Subs with 4x4 and the 454. Is one of these a needle in a haystack? I'm willing to learn to swap axles, but a motor swap is out of my skillset.

I'd eventually like to put in a SM465 or or NV4500 in it, and of course the prerquisite 4"+ lift and 36"+ swampers(if I can't buy one like that).

Welcome to CK5, you've come to the right place. Big blocks aren't nearly as common as SBC burbs but if your not picky about which transit comes with, it shouldn't be too hard to find. A BBC/4L80E burb is about look looking for the holy grail though

not sure about what years (if any) of the older subs had 454's. '91 is the only year will you will find the 4L80E. Sorta wish I held out for a '91 cause no OD SUCKS! I guess it will be a great excuse for that NV4500 though.

burbs only had 454s in the 2wd modles till after 93.
There are some that have factory sm465s (I have one :D ) and have a great granny gear. If you start hanging around this site too much, you cheap burb will get more expesive too....$600 detroits, $1200 iroks....

Good luck

92 had a 454 4x4, I used to work on one.

THe 91 and older burb's never came with a 454 in a 4x4. Only 2wd and swaps.

since your in Cali. as much as you might not want to look for a 73', 74', 75' so you dont have to deal with smog. or a diesel. you could allways update the front clip with a late model sheet metal.

or you could go the route I took and get a later model, my burb is an 89', someone I know gave me a free 74' burb with no motor/trans..........but it has a clean title  you know what to do with it. sounds like you want to build a clean cool rig, best of all you came to the right place. welcome to CK5.

here is a couple of pics of my cough, cough, 74' burb. I just painted the grill flat black. this weekend, Im going to finish the front bumper. going to make it a winch bumper, then it will be powder coated black with silver vain hamertone. since my emblem is missing the "M" and the "C" is broke, Im going to pop the rest out and get some 1/8 inch aluminum diamond plate and cut out the GMC letters and glue or maybe rivit them back in.

91 2500, 350, 4l80e, great price
No one in the silicoln valley wants this stuff, its "too big and old and uses too much gas"

If i could sell the car i've got on the market, i'd be all over this truck

That is a deal right there. Wish I could buy that one to tow my offroad sub around with.
