Hey everyone, new to this forum and have had my 70 K5 for about 6 months. I've been reading all the major build threads in here(67-72). Look forward to getting to know everyone and learning as much as I can. I turn wrenches for a living so I'm not alway super excited to work on my own vehicles when I get home, but am looking forward to some long summer nights working to the k5. Now to the good stuff.
Not much rust and pretty straight body, good condition double wall top with the exterior coated in some kind of bed liner.
Factory a/c cab
Factory 3.73 with posi
350/t350/np205
P/s
P/b
Disc brakes in front
4" lift, Tuff Country springs in the front, blocks in the back
33x12.50x15 Firestone A/T on stock ralley wheels
Cheesy half roll cage
Previous owner built a spare tire carrier, not to bad, does it's job
PO also put one of those chrome bull bars on the front, not to crazy about that, probably coming off soon.
police style spot light?(factory??) I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff

How about some pics on how that swing out tire carrier is built/mounted?

Looks like a good starting point!

Welcome to the site. Nice lookin K5 ya got there. Good for you. :)

So what are your plans for it? Hard core rock rig, clean Trail blazer/DD rig?

Nice truck:waytogo::waytogo::waytogo: Great Find!

I hate your lack of rust. I think you should wash it in salt water everyday for a month so we dont get too jealous.

My plan as of now is to have a very capable truck that I can daily drive. More of a trail rig/dd. I know I want swap in d60/14bff with lockers front and rear and run 35-37" tires, 37 being the absolute biggest i will ever go. It's an auto now but I deff. want to swap in a sm465 at some point, and maybe and atlas II. I want it to be a little overbuilt for the wheeling I will be doing, mostly here in Ok(disney and clayton) and some of the easy to moderate trails in Colorado. Basicly I just want something that will be very reliable on and off road, and very safe for my wife and I. I figure if get the d60 and 14bff, run 37s, keep a sbc in it, and don't wheel it to hard, the chances of breaking things and the frequency of breaking things on the trail should go down alot.
I don't have alot of money to put in it right now, so my imediate plan will be to fix all the rust, get the floor pan and bed sprayed with line-x, do some body work, and slowly aquire parts for the rest of the build while I keep driving it and enjoying it.

I will try to get some more pics of the swing out tire carrier tonight when I get home.

OK, first question, while searching some of the threads here I ran on to one about the t/c mount that bolts to the side of the t-case and to the right frame rail. I thought, man I don't think i've ever noticed that before hmm.... Oh because mine is MIA! completely. So I found the rubber mounts in lmc but I don't know where to get the actual brackets. Anyone have a part # or source to get it? thanks
Dustin

Welcome and great looking K5. I'd say the best source of the brackets will be the classified section here or over at 67-72chevytrucks.com You can get that bracket from a truck or K5 so that will help a bit. I don't know of any repop source.

Amen! Hope you don't mind if I hate you just a little too. (looking out the window at my rusty new beast) Great looking truck!

Swing out tire carrier

Ok, here's the pics and story on the tire carrier. The support is basicly a triangular bracket made of some 1x2 square tube. It mounts directly to the side of the hitch witch is also kind of southern enginered. There is a latch that bolts to the tailgate with a large handle that you pull to disengage the carrierer. There is also a nut welded on the inside of the bumper with a large wingnut to thread into as a backup. The area just above the hole in the tire carrier that is for the wing nut, basicly rides on the bumper. The hole thing is kinda "jankey" but not that bad at the same time. It serves it's purpose well and doesn't look bad. It's not the sturdiest, it drops about 1-2" when swung out all the way, but it's locked up 99.9% of the time so that doesn't matter too much. The bigges down fall is that you have to remove the whole thing to change out the tail lamp bulb. And no, I didn't take it all apart just to take pics, i've been putting off changing that bulb for about a month and finally decided to do it.

Here's the cut out in the bumper where the pivot point/spindle comes up. It is actually centered in the cut out when it's mounted properly, I just threw one bolt in for the pic so it's sitting way off. There's also a close up of the latch.

Hey welcome to the board - Nice rig. You said in the first post that it has a cheesy 1/2 roll bar, but from what I see on the later pics it looks pretty good. Any roll bar specific pics?

Well, had my brother and a friend come over and remove the hard top. I can only handle so many 60 degreee plus days before I had to pull it off. Snaped some pics of the roll bar and my seats. Newer model seats, I don't know what there out of but they are realy comfy and the drivers side is power.
I called the roll bar cheesy because I don't think it would really do much in a roll. It's just very simple, has very small 2x2 scabs, and just the one main hoop. Looks ok i guess but I don't think it's very functional, not that I ever want to test it. But if I ever was in a roll I would want something more substantial
