Hello I’m new. I have been reading posts on here for some time and decided to join. I have an 84 jimmy that I bought from N.C.. it’s in decent shape. So far I have rebuilt the carb and new plugs wires and all normal maintance. My plan for the truck is to be the ultimate hunting camping truck that I have always dreamed of. I have a deposit on a 60/14ff in Pennsylvania that I can’t pick up right now due to the virus. And I will be doing some floor patches in the next couple weeks. They have a couple pin holes that I wanna fix. The interior is completely gutted to fix the floor and replace the carpet with rubber. I currently have 15x12x35 wheel tire combo. My question is when I swap the one tons I was thinking of going down to a 10” wide rim and tire. To maybe help with mileage and drivability. Has anyone had experience with this. Thank you all in advance. It’s nice to meet people with common interest.

Welcome aboard!

35” will be fine for the 10” wide rims, but you will want to check those 15” diameter rims to the one tons, as there may be clearance issues depending on the back space

At one one it common to grind the calipers for clearance, or use a spacer

An alternative could be selling the tire and wheels you have and going to a 17” diameter rim

Oh no the 15x12x35 are six lug. They are gonna be sold or something. I will be buying a new tire and wheel combo and was thinking about going to a narrower wheel and tire but still same diameter. I know it will fit just was wondering if I stand to gain anything by going narrower. Thank you for your response.

It will be a tad lighter. Not sure you will notice too much though

@America.Mike recently got some Firestones at a good price. Nitto and BFG are popular, and a mess of other tires to look at. Probably depends on your budget

Welcome! We use Generals (made in the USA) on all of our vehicles. They have been put through many different situations and out of 5 vehicles over 10 or so years we've had 1 flat. The newer ATx seem to be a solid all terrain tire, the wife is using them right now. They can be had within your budget. I know the 16" rim is on it's way out but is a good option with 315/75 16 size tires. I use these on a 16x8 rim on my 1 ton crew cab.

How is the road noise?

Fwiw, i run a nexen roadian at pro ra8 on My wife's suburban and they handle the wet roads great, pull good for a 2wd truck and are quiet. Not a long wearing tire, though. You're going to end up with a 37 for a set of tons though, to make up lost ground clearance

They're pretty quiet for us.

I’m shaving the axle soon as I get it.
