Hey guys, new member here. Tried the Pirate for a short time but couldn't tolerate it over there lol. They have good info but getting it seems to be the problem. My names Cam, 26 yrs old. Love working on my cars and trucks. I have a 1985 K10 I've been working on for a few yrs now. Just bought a 1 ton CUCV truck this past Friday for parts so hopefully I can get my truck build going. Maybe I want get flamed for making my first newbie post :D

Nothing wrong with post here. Welcome. Prepare to spend about 4 times what you want/think/need to spend.

Tell me abt it lol, I grew up working on Chevy's and helping my dad work on his K10. I had a 82 Toyota straight axle I traded for a K10 with a stock 305, 4.11 gears, and 36 tsl's. I thought being we had a chevy junk yard practically it would be cheaper. I grenaded the rear axle after a few months so I installed another just to get me going and then the tranny went out first trip out of the driveway so I went a little over board and yanked everything out. It currently sits with a rebuilt th350, np203, 454, 3.73 14bff and a 10 bolt front axle. My plans were to pull the 1 tons out of the CUCV and put them under my k10, but from what I've read the 1 ton has a stronger frame so at this point I'm not sure what direction to take. I've thought since I've had mine that the frame looked bent...its had a sag between the bed and cab but I've put all new cab bushings in it already so I may just cut the frame down.

I could do mine over again I would shorten a K30 frame for my stepside.
at this point my 1/2 frame will get boxed. Someday.
if you can't weld or lack fabrication skills,
First: You need to learn.
Second: Nothing wrong with switching axles.

Yea, shortening the frame is the smartest choice. I'm just impatient and ready to be back riding lol, so that's what's got me wanting to just swap axles. Welding wouldn't be a problem, got a welding diploma and going on 8 yrs experience now :thumb:.

I've let it sit on the back burner for abt 2 yrs now while we had our son and getting him to the point where he stays outside with me mostly. Haven't had much time to work on it. But he's got to where he wants to ride allll day every day ever since I started riding him in daddy's truck lol. He has a 73-87 K10 :D with 1 tons and 4.88's and 39.5 boggers with a 454..thought the open headers would scare him but he has a ball...definitely watches to much Dukes of Hazzard with all the "yeehawing" he does.

I wish I had kept my stepside bed, the 36's didn't feel the fenderwells up as much as I liked so I traded it for my dads fleetside.

Get it running and enjoy with your little one asap.

I have spent more years building my truck then enjoying it.

I think that building them is fun, but getting out there and enjoying them is even better. I think that gets lost on this site some.

That's definitely the plan, He's what lit the fire back under me to get it going. First thing he does when we go outside is run to it saying he wants to ride lol.

Welcome to the brotherhood! Nice to see another Georgia guy in here. Let me know if you need anything and good luck on the build. Oh yeah, post some pics of your trucks when get enough post to do so. :D And fill out your sig so we know what you have

Thanks man, get the pics up as soon as I can. Don't have much to post or put in a signature though lol, taking two broke down trucks and building up one. Sold all the half ton stuff including tires so ones blocked up and ones on roll arounds.

The one ton frame is stronger but it's still a wet noodle comparatively speaking. Might wanna look at cages or frame boxing. But don't do it to a bent frame.

Welcome to the site man

So what's the end game with your truck?

Cages? Just looking to build something I can beat on in the mud. Went from a stock 305 with TH350/203 combo with 10/12 bolt with 4.11's and 36 tsl's. Paid 1000 bucks for the CUCV 1 ton truck w/ 4.56's and lockers so wanting to use those with my big block and going 40-42" tires probably. Got an older fella that calls me pretty regular and checks up on my build lol, he's big into mudbogs and he's trying to talk me into going with a doubler as well so that's still a big question mark right now...

Sounds like you stole that CUCV for $1000. The front axle is worth that if it still has the D60. Rear should have a detroit. If you are wanting to build a mudtruck, it sounds like you are off to a good start although I'm not sure a doubler is needed for that. If you are wanting a crawler, then I would definetly go that route.

Yea I definitely got a good deal on the truck, I feel like. I knew a little bit about the truck beforehand. I worked on it for a buddy of mine a few years ago. The dana 60 had a broke leaf spring stud I had to get out. He beat on em pretty good but it only lasted for abt 6 months before they junked it out out... never could keep the front driveshaft in it. I was just fixing to pull the trigger on a dana 60 for 1k before I bought this whole truck. It still has the locker in the rear, 6 inch springs, brand new shocks, th400/208 combo, and brand new exhaust under it.

:waytogo: smart move

Maybe I'll get my ducks in a row and get a build thread going and actually be able to contribute to the forum. LOL, right now I'm staring at two trucks trying to figure out where to start back..
