Did Chevy use a 14 bolt FF in '03 3/4 tons? A guy I know says he knows where one is at for $400. It has factory disc brakes and 4.10 gears with posi (guess its a govlock) and low miles and 10.5" ring gear. Is this a candidate to swap on a K5? Is perch width the same or 40.5" like a ton 14b? Most of the stuff I read only talks about 14 bolts thru 00' models.

I thought it might not be too bad a deal, especially with the disc brakes already there.

The '01-up Silverado/Sierra HDs with the 6.0L gas engine have a 10.5" 14BFF. The '01-up Silverado/Sierra HDs with the Duramax Diesel and 8.1L gas engine have the AAM 11.5 rearend. The 3500s(both SRW and DRW) have the AAM 11.5 rearend regardless of what engine is powering it.

Thanks, I knew some of you guys would know what it is.

Still I'm wondering if there's any additional issues (since its a newer model) with the swap and if it's worth dishing out a few more bucks to have the factory disc brakes on it. I always thought a person should be able to pick up a decent 14b for $200-250.

I think it's the "newer" factor playing to the price. But it would save you a lot of work vs. doing the rear disc setup yourself. Wish I could find a deal like that.

I would say that this is a good deal. With the factory disc brakes, and e-brake, this is a great axle. If I'm not mistaken the e-brake on this is actually a drum setup on the inside of the brake rotor, that meens more holding power than the eldo caliper setup we use on the older axles. I'm sure you still need to mod your master cylinder and/or your proportioning valve but thats just the nature of upgrading brakes!

I'm 93.857% sure that it won't bolt in. Shocks and spring perches are way different...

Hell, you've got to that on the old ones too- if its from a 1 ton anyway.

They are that type of p-brake.

Sounds like a good deal man. Perches and shock mounts aren't a big deal.

the AAM 10.5 is the same axle that the corprate 14 bolt is parts will interchange for all years, now the AAM 11.5 is a totaly new desgin, it does not use the third pinion support bearing, uses a giant one peace carrier. it is a beast of a axle the center section alnoe with out the tubes weighs 135 pounds. I get to work with theses axles every day this summer im workign as a intern in the product engineering part that does makes the 11.5 14 bolt and its drive shafts

my 06' 2500HD axle looks just like the 14ff axle as far as the cover is concerned. I was looking at it the other day and I thought it would make a great axle to swap into a k5. as said pearches/shock mounts are nothing to mod. but the factory break setup is way cool.

I changed my diff gear oil and I allmost broke out my crane diff cover just to see if it was exactly the same but did'nt. the cover bolts are mertic though.

yeah all the new style axles are big beef, just go to a truck pull, all u see is duramax after duramax pulln that sled and wheel hoppin yet but they just keep blowin out that black smoke and tuggin along and then that ford and dodge without wheel hop is snappin lol. for 400 i still say go for it, buyin an older one will just require 400 to rebuild while this one just cut and move perch and shock mounts and not worry about that rear forever.

So how come I don't hear everyone running out and getting these MCs for the 4 wheel disc swaps?
