New owner.

You may have seen me around for a while, but I just now got lucky enough to join your ranks as an owner. I brought my new toy home yesterday evening. I am the proud owner of a 1970 K5. It is in pretty good shape, has some rust under the floor pans, but not bad. The A/C and Heat don't work, but I'm not real worried about that. I plan on putting a bikini top on it somehow, and using it for a beach, offroad toy. It does still have the original TH350 tranny, which will probably be rebuilt soon. Are there any immediate upgrades I should do? It already has a Rancho steering stabilizer and new BF Goodrich 31 inch mudders. I was wondering if there are any mods that should be made to help it last longer and be a little tougher. I also got the original hard top with it, but may end up selling it. It has one small crack in the fiberglass just above the back glass. Does anyone know how much this may be worth. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Well there are many many many things you can do to your rig!!
I would start with everything that keeps the rig rolling! I know that is a very general statment but hey there are many things to talk about. So feel free to pick a section of your rig and let the fun begin!!

Oh and that top is worth about 400 to a stranger and 200 to a buddy

. I too have that crack in my top but I don't use the hard top so ohwell.

Well let me think, ouch ok no thinking just typing

Reinforce the frame were the steering box mounts.
Frontend Dana 44 if not allready done convert it to disk brakes!! Drive shafts are straight and not strached out.
How's the 4wheel mode? Does Low and High work?
You can get almost anything for thease rigs.........
I replace ALL my body mounts with Energy susp. Poly mounts and it made a WAY huge better ride, smoother quiter the whole bit.!!!

Crawl under your rig and find a starting point, snap a pic bring it here and we will tell what is or can be done!

Thanks Burt. It looks like the body mounts have been replaced recently, and both 4Low and 4 High work just fine. I think I saw a thread one time about someone who makes a reinforcement for the frame where the steering box mounts. I'll try to find it later. At least that gives me somewhere to start. Does anyone know is there are any companies out there that make bikini tops for them yet? I am pretty good with mechanics and metal, but not with fabric and thread. Thanks again.

The after maket brace everyone is talking about is from Off-Road Desin. But it will not worrk with a first gen K5!
Look on the inside of your frame were the steer box bolts. Look to see if you see a second plate shaped like the inside of the frame rail!. If it is not there you can get one and it's called a weld in steering brace not a bolt in!

Bikini Top, sorry no were have I been able to find one and I have been looking for years!! So dudes have had custom one made by a local boat cover shop and convertable top shop!

Another easy thing to check would be to jack up the front end just enought to get the front tires off to see if you can rock your tires in and out from top to bottom. If it move at all then your ball joints are toast or warn!!
