Just bought 1999 Tahoe, 147,000 miles. Gonna change all fluids just so I know they're fresh. Looking for input on oil preferences.

My 86 K5 has always had Mobile 1 full synthetic since I bought it in 2003. Never had an issue so nothing to say its good or bad (nothing wrong means good I guess). It was a brand new crate motor tho. It would be advantageous to run Mobile 1 full syn on all rigs.

I've heard I should look for something high in zinc or something. I don't know, lets hear it from you guys.

:dunno::bow:

Let's see. It's a roller cam, no history of what happened the last 147k

Any 5w30 you want and change around 3-4k, depending how you use the truck.

Switching to a synthetic now won't help. That baby is worn in the way its going to be.

Ditto.

The only question of what a motor needs is whether its a roller cam or not. If it is its totally a matter of preference.

96-up get roller cams.

5w-30 oil good quality will be fine with wix / purilator filter .

and 96-00 vortecs knows for intake gasket leaks / eat dist gears / crack off dist cap ear's that hold cap down.

if 99-up ls series motors 4.8/5.3/6.0 thay just run good. water pump gasket to block go bad / knock sensors were small problem .

that's why they are called the Orange can of death.

Check the intake gaskets twice. They will ruin the engine if they leak into it.

if 96-00 vortec first gen .

and yep fram SUCKS these days. filters rattle out of the box on some already . most do when removed. :eek1:

simple Valvaline maxlife 10w40 "winter" and 20w50 "summer" (CA seasons anyway) or whatever is in the garage
wix

if your 99 tahoe is anything like my 01 s10, intake gaskets and injection spider,
also, if it still has the red coolant, flush that crap really well and put some green stuff in

I got a Fram on my L31, works just fine :D

I usually run 10w30 in the summer n 5w30 in the winter, no particular reason why either.

Eh, I switched all the families vehicles over to synthetic, no problems, I understand the high mileage and yeah, they're well worn in, but I'm just hoping they last as long as possible, hopefully switching over to full synthetic adds life to those motors.

Dads car had over 130k, switched over, no issues yet, been running it for the past two years so far, moms 4.3 had over 240k miles, switched 3 years ago, no leaks, runs fine, heck even both motors sounded smoother when I switched them over, amazing stuff, I live for synthetic oil only in every engine I own.

I just run the thicker oils I can find in full synthetic, due to the higher mileage, usually only find it at Walmart though, 10/40 weight. For some reasons, the local auto parts stores don't carry anything thicker than like 10/30.

And obviously a high quality filter now as well, I used to run nothing but Frams until I learned how they are built, now it's nothing but AC Delco, WIX, Napa Golds or primarily Mobile 1 filters.
