The 82 K2500 made some disturning banging noises the other day, when I was driving it with the hubs locked in,but in 2wd...it seemed OK until I got about a mile up my street, then at about 20 mph on the snow packed slick road, the truck did a sudden jerking like something bound up ,then a loud "bang" came from what I think was the front or center of the truck...fekt like something got caught in the drive train, then broke free..

I pulled over and unlocked the hubs and continued on my way,and drove it about 6 miles with no further noises..when I got home I checked the axle u-joint I had replaced in october to ensure the caps had not come out or the yoke ears had broke--it looked fine, and spins OK without touching the C yoke on the axle housing ,so I assume thats not doing it..

I jacked up the front and rear ends and tried spinning the wheels by hand, they turned freely and I did not feel anything unusual, like chunks of gear teeth busted...thought maybe a spider gear lunched or something but I guess not..

I plowed my driveway with the truck last friday OK,it didn't make that noise or have that "lock up" feeling, the front end does seem to waddle side to side more while plowing around a corner though, that slight kicking back in the steering wheel feeling--which its always had ,but maybe seems more pronounced since I replaced the axle joint..
I have not tried driving it over 20 mph with the hubs locked in 4wd yet,and now the roads are bare tar so I didn't try too..

I'm wondering if my transfer case ,which has had a strange problem since I got the truck as far as sending power to the front shaft in 2WD ,despite checking and confirming the linkage is adjusted right, maybe something internal is not unlocking and letting it go in 2WD,and now its decided to break free?..maybe the chain is jumping?..

OR,the hub I took apart on the drivers side might have been put together "wrong",but I was careful to keep everything in the same order and position when I finally got it off (you may recall the thread I had on that dilema!)...

Another thing thought of ,but doubt is causing the trouble,is I had a flat tire and the spare I put on the rear is a 245/75 -16 and the other 3 tires are 265/75-16...I dont know if it has a Gov-Loc ,never had the diff covers off rear or front yet...maybe someone welded the spiders and the welds are coming off now for all I know...

Another weird thing the truck does sometimes is "freeze up" after its been sitting--it'll act like the brakes are stuck, you gas it a little and it'll go "crack" and break free, and drive normally...I never use the E brake so I know thats not doing it...I cant tell if its the tranny, rear end or t-case that locks up..no wheel bearing noises either!...it had not done that for a long time after I put new wheel cylinders on it,but it did it friday after I parked it for 3 hours after I plowed--it could have been melted snow that froze in the drums,it was 10 degrees, but its done this in the heat of summer too before...

Anyone have any guesses?...think its the hub, maybe I screwed up?..or the T-case has internal woes?...the way it acted it did remind me of a K5 I bought that had a 3:73 front axle and a 3.08 in the back ,and when I tried using 4WD it did the big bind and bang--but my truck wasnt as harsh as that one when it did it...

im going to say its the sam thing that happened to me a couple months ago. i had 1 different size tire out of 3 it was on the back, and after a couple miles it locked up on me, did the same thing you say and it shook over 5mph after it happened to me. i let it sit a couple hours and it was fine. put a matching set of tires on, and freshened up the rear end, and all is good.

hope its that simple
