new shafts in '71 axle ????

I've read before that in a dana 44 you can put newer('73-79) shafts in pre 73 axle. So I though I would try it but I can't seem to find any seal to fit. Have any of you try it and if you have do you have part numbers?? Thanks!

Which seal do you mean? The one in the diff case? I remember seeing some rubber seals on the outer stubs of later models near the hub, but the 1st gens don't seem to have it.

This might help you out. When I removed the '71 D44 from my Burb, I compared a few things to the '77 8-lug D44 I was going to put in.

The spindle on the left is the '71 with the seal. The stub on the '77 axle (black) has the seal.....hence no seal in the '77 spindle.

Thanks for the pictures. That rubber one in the first picture is what I ended up using.
