I bought a set of 33 X 12.50 Mudstars for the M1009, and it looks much better. I am not having any rubbing problems, but I'm thinking about lifting it a couple of inches just to help it look a little tougher. I also painted the rims, and when I had them off, I pressure washed amd painted the whole underside of the truck. It looks much better not seeing the dirty, crusty axles and wheelwells. I have bought the correct CARC paint for it, and when I get the driver's side rocker panel welded in, I am going to repaint it the original pattern 3 color Woodland camo.

Sorry that was a typo - it was supposed to be "and". The paint I used was alkyd equipment enamel. It was wet in some of the pics, but it dries flat.

A friend of mine owns an upholstery shop, and we are working on a soft top to use in the warm months. I want to make an easily removeable canvas "slantback" style top for it. I have an extra blazer top, and I plan to cut it down away most of the top and leave about an inch along the cab and bedside to have a place to snap the top. I would finish out where it was cut, and just leave it on when I want to ride around topless. I am going to try to have it built and ready by spring. Here's some renderings of what I have in mind.

Here is basically what it would look like with soft top off and with portion of the modified top that remain on the Blazer.

Holy crap! They came from the factory like that, down the assembly line? I never knew that. Those are some cool pictures.! I learn something here everyday!

Oh yeah. GM built 70,000 of CUCV's (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) in several different variants from '84 - '87. They all have diesels, TH400 trans, 24V system with dual alternators, blackout light lights, NATO 24V slave cable plug, pintle hitches, among other features. The military is phaseing them out, and I bought my M1009 for a tad over $1500 with 53,000 original miles. The diesel gets 21 MPG in town, and its become my daily driver. I have a newer gas sucking Z71 that I rarely drive anymore!-lol

Those are nice pics but I have mixed emotions about some of those guys on the Steel Soldier site.

There's some pretty cool guys there, but there are some that take the military thing a little too far...

Exactly, I agree.
Pretty much why I and many other members abandoned it over the past few years. They chased away some good, knowledgable members because we...gasp...wanted to modify OUR trucks. Ask kennyw about that one.

Ugh...the 24v to 12v conversion debate...just petty and stupid.

Yeah, the 24V system is sacred to some of them. I'm keeping the appearance stock because I like the look, but I have a Banks turbo kit that I am going to add to it, and I am going swap it over to 12V if the 24V system becomes troublesome.

There was an old guy over there, REVERED by some members, who was famous for reading TM's and knowing everything they said. He was ANTI MODIFICATION completely. Even adding a radio was a sin. Used to talk trash on posts when guys would talk about taller tires or offroading and using the trucks. He just drove his stock in New England and rusted them to death...

I got him once when I suggested a steering brace to a guy for his CUCV and he got all bothered about how it wasn't in the TM and I just told him reality wasn't in the TM either.

He was revered and respected but it seemed only by the "preserve it and put it in a museum" crowd. He passed away and there were pages of crying and whining with claims of how smart he was and all I could say was he and I battled a few times.

I've had thoughts of another CUCV but going all out on it AND hanging out back over there.

Also completely non-impressed with the modification tech over there. Lots of super stiff lifts, bad steering mods, multiple shocks, shoddy radio installations...blah. I hang here.

What was his username? I'd like to go read up some stuff about him. Just for s h i t s and giggles.

And no, I'm not gonna join just to spout my mouth off. I would never do that. :doah::whistle::haha:

ace tomato co or something like that. Think it was all one word. He passed away 2 years ago or so. Might have knew his **** with Deuces and other purpose made military stuff but his CUCV posts were self righteous and usually wrong.

Eh, I kicked the hornets nest a few years ago and got my pee pee slapped when I bitched about one of their sponsors and the truck they sold me (Big Ugly) not being quite up to the sales pitch. I got a bunch of folks with similar stories to back me up and even then the mods and admins had more interest in telling me to sit back down and shut up than in addressing a problem in that "hobby". Whatever. I just show up there every once in a while to try and help out some wayward soul, direct guys here, and pee on the morons.

Did you buy an alfaheaven truck?

He is still. To their credit or the credit of the crappy economy he hasn't been an advertiser there for a few years as far as I can tell.

I give the guy credit...excellent sales man...also excellent liar and good at deceiving people. I blame myself for falling for it though.
