I have a buddy that has a 97 GMC Yukon that just had a new steering box put on his truck and it seems like the steering is too tight and a little grabby in some spots.. He was told it would loosen up as time goes by and has put about 100 miles on it so far.. He says it has got a little better but it still don't seem right to me..

So what would cause this ?

How do you fix it ?

Another thing besides the stiff, jerky steering is after the the new box was installed the steering wheel is off center  It is not out of allignment so my guess is that maybe when it was installed the steering wheel was off center when he put it back together..

I know somebody has seen this before and can tell me what the problem is ?

From personal experience from installing reman box's on my rig is that the new ones are stiffer than the old ones and after a couple of hard wheelin trips they start to turn like butter. They were only slightly stiffer than normal. If you have oversensitive steering and stiff, you might want to exchange it or adjust the steering box preload (maybe to tight).
