As compared to the Goodyear M/T's, they are softer and newer. I got mine from Trailworthy Fab (I don't think they have any at this point) and they are dated '08 IIRC, most of the Goodyears I have seen are from the 90's.
They're definitely better offroad than the Goodyears, their compound seems inline with the BFG mud terrain while the Goodyears are about the hardest tire you can get. I have 5000-7000 miles on them so far and can't really tell that they've worn any, so far so good.
The story I got on them was that the military bought them as replacements for the old Goodyears and the BFG's were popping off the beads like crazy: turns out that they need different inserts or something and the military just got rid of the tires rather than changing inserts. Mine were all basically brand new and all of them had grease inside (supposedly from the grease bag that pops when the tire goes flat so that the run flat doesn't destroy the tire).
