Need some thoughts. Just purchased my Dream 89 K5
She has a tranny / t case issue. I believe it to be mechanical. However not entirely sure. Figured I'd put it out there. Perhaps someone has overcome this issue.
Won't go in to any gear. Best combo I've come up with is cycle the key running on / off Giggle the 4x4 into 2high That seams to work. Once in gear no problem. Guy I purchased it from said tranny is gone. However after looking at the tranny fluid. Looks new smells new. Then messing with the 4wheel drive levers was able to drive it back down his drive way into the street then forward onto the flat bed tow truck.
Any ideas. Please let me know. Plan on keeping this baby forever. Mean while love to get her out on the highway where she deserves
thanks. KC

<Bumping thread>

Welcome to the forum. No idea about the tranny issue but one of these guys will know.

Only 1 transfer case shifter I assume. Sounds like an issue with transfer case shift linkage. It's easy to disconnect under truck, can then turn shaft with a small adjustable wrench, I think all the way counter clockwise is 2high, if not it's the other way haha. You will feel/hear it click through the ranges. Once verified the case is passing power you can go from there.

T-case might be sticking in neutral. Not sure, but I would try rebuilding it before messing with the trans. Worse case, you have both rebuilt and reliable :D

Actually, you might try taking the linkage for the Tcase apart, cleaning, and properly adjusting before anything else. The arm on the case should be pushed all the way rearward for 2H.

Outstanding. I'll be trying what you guys are posting.
And yes only one stick. On the floor. Tranny is the 700r4. I believe a NP 208 tcase. The transfer case is shiny new grey/ silver looking. Prior owner said was rebuild by "local trans shop" he drove for awhile then wouldn't go in gear at all. What you guys are saying is a huge help.

Here's an obvious question. Does it hold in park? If the t-case is stuck in neutral, it won't hold in park.

Also if the t-case was in neutral and you had the transmission in drive or reverse ,and went to put it in park, you'd hear the teeth grinding off the park pawl !....BBBZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzTTT!.....

89 is the NP 241 with mechanical speedo. One year only, in '90 and 91 it was still a 241, but with a VSS output for speedo, rather than a cable.

I agree it's something in the linkage adjustment, or they messed something up in the range selection part of the case.

Quick update. I was able to locate the adjustable threaded rod. Literally a Couple turns, then resnug both sides of the threaded rod. Road tested flawless. 2H. To 4H. Then 4low. Round the block. Then highway speeds.
Thank you all very much for the quick tips. Looking forward to many more topics.

You only owe us pics dude... We like pics. Glad you got it working!

Glad you got it working. I was going to say when I picked up my K5, one of the auto locking hubs on the front axle was not releasing and had the t-case all pissed off.

Pretty solid looking Blazer. Nice score. Previous owner must have been a Bronco fan.
