New to me 14boltFF, needs diagnosis update with pic

yup still got the 3500. This is going in an 84 blazer I just picked up. Ok I will start tearing it down tomorrow. Im sure I will be asking many questions :D

k got the axles out, and the bearing caps off, do I just pull the r&p out?

You need to turn the adjuster collars outward in order to remove the carrier. It is adviseable to count the turns so you have a starting point when re-assembling things. If you don't know what i mean by adjusting collars they are the pieces with all the holes in them just to each side of the carrier bearings.

what should I use to turn the collars with? Will have some pics up. the bearings that I can see look like poop. When I took the axles out water poured out:(

You "should" use a spanner wrench but I used a punch that was about the same size as the hole in the adjuster. I put it in the hole and turned it. Both adjusters have right hand threads. Turn the left adjuster up to loosen, turn the right adjuster down to loosen.

Good luck,
Mike

ok got it out. The driver side collar moved pretty easily, but the pass. side need a lil tug. The driver side bearing seems to at least move but the pass. side is seized. The ring gear looks ok besides the rust build up, same the thing with the pinion. The pinion bearing support is also totally seized. Any trick to pulling the pinion out?

If you remove all of the bolts, then thread two bolts back in about 1/4" it will keep the whole thing from flying out and landing on the floor when you whack the end of the pinion with the mallet.

dang, undid the bolts and smcked it a few times real good. I have a feeling the rust is fighting me all the way on this :D

Mine came out quite hard. I had to hit the pinion quite a few times.

Good luck,
Mike

....thats not so bad. I've seen alot worse. appears to all be surface rust. Unless theres pitting with the rust, it hasn't been in water that long. it'll be fine. new bearing kit, buff the rust out, scotchbrite pads or whatever.

We were just talking about this I think in another thread, but if you didn't put timeing marks on the gears before you took the carrier out , when you reset the gears, and it howls, it might not be a bad set it might be the lack of timeing marks. not much you can do about it at this point though, but keep your fingers crossed it doesn't howl.

doh no timing marks:o I was thinking on just getting a detroit and putting it in since it's apart anyway. Gonna look into the whole getting it acid dipped.
