Just picked one up on Crack-list for 45 bucks :woot:. Im pretty jazzed about picking on up so cheap even though it didnt come with anything other than the mike. Now its off to the truck stop to get some parts and an antenna. Just posting here because my wife just doesnt seem to get excited over stuff like this(:dunno:).

Thinking about building my own bracket to mount the antenna between the hard top and the body about 6 inches back from the cab on the drivers side. I figure i can ust the topper bolt and with a little prep work it should give a good ground and put the antenna at a good height for a 3 or 4 ft firestick. Either that or ill run a whip havent decided yet so ill see if somethings on sale (cheaper-the great decider).

Anyone tried this before? Im running my search button like a raped ape but havent come up with anything yet.

Going with a mirror mount, a 9FT coax, and a 3FT wilson flex. Will mount it to the pass side mirror and see what happens.

Any one know if the SWR meter thats built into the Cobra 29 is sufficient to tune the antenna or should i find someone with an actual meter? I'm not going to be calling in indirect fire or airstrikes

so extended range isnt going to be an issue. Especially with only a 3 footer. :D

I have a 29 in the 18 wheeler, one in my pickup, and one in my blazer. the built in meter will get you tuned good enough. I have a Wilson magnet mount antenna on the roof of the pickup

on the blazer, I just clipped it to the military antenna mount:

but that thing is going to have to go soon. I don't think it'll hold up to much hard wheeling...and a magnet mount will be knocked off by the first tree. I am thinking of bumper mounting a firestik when I get the new bumper built. those things can take some abuse.

So last weekend i got it all mounted up and wired in to discover that my new-to-me radio dont work. The CB will turn on and the speaker will make a quiet pop followed by a real quiet hiss . The unit lights up and when I key the mike the SWR meter will move and the xmit light comes on however I cant get it to xmit or recieve. I tuned the antenna and got the SWR reading in at about 1.8-ish but still nothing. Another thing is that if i turn the squelch all the way off i do not get any static. Is it broke or am I on the short bus?

Got another mic to try? I dont THINK they will even receive without a mic.....could be wrong though

I have an extra mic. I have one I will give you. I could send it to you tomorrow If you would like. Let me know.
