It's been a while since I've been here... Long story short... Divorce, had to sell the K5, spent a little over a year stuck in a 2wd Toy Taco... and am just about to acquire a 98 Silverado 1500 4x4. 57K original miles on it for $4,500.

Anyone have any suggestions of things to look out for? I don't have any experience with the newer Chevy's... Do they still have the frame cracking issues? All I've heard is intake manifold gaskets will go and possibly the passenger side front half shaft seal.

This truck will be more of a hunting / fishing rig, so no heavy wheeling.

Thanks all, hope everyone is doing well!

hmmm..... trying to remember what i had to do on those when i was still a tech.

1. Anything with OBDII, SOP is to check for any stored fault codes.

2. If it has G80, be forwarned its the gov bomb. be kind to it, but i think for what youre using it for, youll be fine.

3. i replaced a few wheel speed sensor hubs on those, not sure if it was a common problem.

hmmm..... thats really all that pops to mind.

Thanks for the tips. I'll take a peek tomorrow when I pick it up to see if it's the G80. Now that you mention hubs... I seem to recall something about an ABS light coming on and having to change the whole hub to replace the sensor...

With that low mileage, hoepfully all your front end rubber/bushings are in good shape. Besides that, see what rear end it has in it. Some got 6 lug 14 bolt Semi floats, some got 10bolt's. You want the 14 bolt, but the 10bolt will work. The 10 bolt g80 is the one to be afraid of, the 14 bolt one lasts ok. Besides that, the next weakest link is that trans. Get a good cooler on it, and only change the trans fluid if it looks like it has been changed regularly before.
