New (to me) tow rig -- help!

I also just got a tow rig, 1999 f350. A higher mileage diesel is nothing to be to scared about depending on what its been used for and what maintenance has been done. The number one problem I have found with the diesels is tranny life (automatics mostly)(both ford and dodge). If the tranny hasnt been replaced already with those kinda miles be a little worried especially if the truck was used for hauling or towing. The other thing is to try and find out the maintenance history on the truck, Dodge diesels will easily go for 300k miles as long as they have had proper maintenance and upkeep. The best thing thing to do now that you have your mind made up on a Dodge is like stated before me and go to Dodge specific sites, they will be a lot better at getting into the specifics of which years are better and what problems to look for. Also dont overlook the other brands out there both Ford and Chevy have decent Diesel trucks, its really preference because they all have there problems. I got my 99 F350 Crewcab 4x4 lifted for only $14000 a couple months ago and it only has 94000 miles plus a new tranny that was built with all the good parts including a billit torque converter.

Thanks guys!

I'm going to test out the '01 on Saturday :1zhelp:

Hey, just my $.02... Im a happy owner of a '98 12 valve cummins, i tow with it daily over 10K#. i bought it at 170K, It now has 260 on it. FYI, i had to put a new auto trans in it right off the bat, to the tune of 4100...if you can get a 2001 24 valve for 12 grand, i would jump on it. like the diesel forum said, the 24valves have pump issues, they also had some electrical issues early on. get the fuel pressure checked out, the electrical fuel pump isnt the big dollar item, its the injector pump that will destroy you. make sure its been either rebuilt or good.
i think the 01 is the last year of that body style, and imo the best year to buy one. i like my 12 valve, but i do wish i had an 01 24 valve just for the extra juice.
