I picked up a pair of Lista cabinets from a customer that was going out of business. Bolted the two together put on casters and now I have a heavy duty tool box. The tool box has 12 18x18x6 drawers, each rated at 450. The cabinets were $100 each and spent $72 on casters and $10 on paint. So for $282 I have a very nice tool box.

I'd venture a guess that the vast majority of guys on this site who work out of Snap-on boxes turn wrenches for a living. The rest of us, well.......

True. But reading everyone's posts about new boxes makes me feel like a schmuck ;)

My main reason for not setting up a "nice" box ($2-300 nice) is that i use so many of my tools away from my garage. Whether i am at my parents place, or the lake, or the launch ramp, or whatever, my stuff travels in the burb alot. Socket set is in the craftsman case (that sucks) that it came in. Wrenches the same. Bought soft wrench pouches for the ratchets wrenches. Basic hand tools get carried in a small tool box in the truck. And the rest of the less frequest use stuff sits at home on various old tool boxes that were given to me or on shelves.

I hear you on the snap-on box. This box should work out nice for me and is a nice upgrade to my Craftsman box.

Nice... is it lockable?

Never got the whole 5K toolbox thing... I can buy 2 300 boxes from lowes and hold the same amount of tools. Basically you pay 4400 for a name.

It makes sense for pros that are in their boxes every day 200x. Then those guys get spoiled on teh quality, and buy them for home.
Not for lots of ppl though.

Not really... wasted money is wasted money. I guess if you just want to say you have a snap on box then it makes some sense.:dunno:

I picked up a couple new boxes as well. $159 each.:haha:

Don't feel bad! I find it hard to justify the expense in a box, but on the other hand, I don't exactly turn wrenches for a living either.

Spindles, yes, Wrenches, no.

Yes it is lockable. It has a vertical bar on each cabinet that that flips over the left hand side of the drawers and has a tab for a pad lock.If you look close at the picture you can see what i am talking about.

The box turned out great and I am very with the quality of the Lista product. I have looked at many tool boxes and the Lista cabinet are by far the best built. I sat in one of the drawers when i got them because I was told they were rated at 450 LBS. I am 220 and it held no problem.

there is a big difference between a box made by any of the tool companies as opposed to a box from craftsman or similar quality. when you turn wrenches everyday for a living you want something that will work like a well oiled machine because when your flat rate, TIME = MONEY so the faster you are the more money you make. i can't justify having a box that expensive at my own garage because there time doesn't equal money. the craftsman boxes with the grip latch are nice and so are their stainless steel boxes, but they are still cheap in quality compared to a box from a tool company. you can feel the drawers flex and twist. that's just my .02

I see where your coming from. I worked with a guy that had a 5k toolbox but really where does the money come into play? I can open my box just as fast as he can but I paid 4k less. I dunno... I just don't see the point of a 5k toolbox. Impacts, power tools, etc I see it, but toolboxes.... I just don't get.

If you've got the money and want one then more power to ya.... I just don't see a practical reason to buy a 5k toolbox.

ah, I remember being in my early 20's and knowing everything, joyous oblivion...

I can put 300 pds in a drawer in my KRL, and it opens BETTER than when empty... put 300 lbs in a Craftsmen drawer and good luck opening it... especially for a dealer mechanic who's in his box 200 x's a day..

weekend warrior? sure knock yourself... Pro mechanic? it's called a commitment to being a professional..

You can tout your cheapy HF stuff all you want, turn wrenches for a living and the difference between Taiwan junk and quality is evident... boxes included....

I have over 60 grand in tools, 10 grand of it being my box... and I don't regret it one bit...

to the OP... nice ingenuity with the bolting together!

Nice box...

My Ball bearing kobalt seems to do fine packed full.:dunno:

I do turn wrenches for a living.... not as much as a mechanic but theres a fair amount of wrenching. All I'm saying here is I can't justify it. I'd much rather have the extra 4k in my pocket or truck. Since I haven't had any probelms (nor have any of the guys at work) with a decent ball bearing box. Seems to open just fine to me:crazy::dunno:. Who knows I might have one 10 years down the road but I'm sure as hell not gonna be the guy with the 5k toolbox who can't afford to put any tools in it. My job doesn't require a TON of tools but still need alot... Honestly if I bought a big box like that and filled it up I'd probably only use half the stuff in it. For me it's really hard to justify an extra 4k because the drawers open smoother.

sounds like you're right then, you are not a professional mechanic. then the good box isn't for you. If your job requires you to tinker with some hand tools doesn't make you a mechanic so you would have noidea when the need for a quality box becomes apparent. and thats fine too. but don't for a second knock a good box because you don't need one.

for the record my $5000 Mac box. with well in to the 10s of thousands of dollars in tools inside.

Nice color on the box, mine is yellow too. My service cart is orange though.

And its not only the drawers where the difference is, it's how long the wheels will live, and how soon the frame racks when you have lots and lots of weight in it.

Use your Kobalt the way I use my service cart and it will be dead in a year.

No question the quality is MUCH better but my box never moves.... she just sits in the corner waiting until I need somehting. I guess it's a mechanic thing... Just don't need a 5k box in the fabbing game.

I like being able to throw sparks on my box and not worry about it...
