I have wanted one of these things for years, and finally got one. I was looking around Government Liquidation one day and saw several of them ending in about 2 hours. They were close to me, so I started watching the auctions, and I registered and made a bid on the nicest looking one I saw thinking it would probably go higher. Well, I was wrong. I won it. I had no idea how the EUC thing worked or anyway. So after my 91 day wait, I finallly got to go get it. It runs and drives great, has low mileage, and is relatively straight. It even has an uncracked dash pad, which shocked me! It needs a driver's side window, vent glass and rear wiindow regualor, but for what I gave for it, I'm not complaining. I'm loving it so far. It garners about as much attention as my '69 Camaro SS does, and it definitely something a little different. I cleaned it up yesterday, took a few wet shots of it. It looks great in these pics, but it pretty faded. I'm planning on a fresh coat of paint with the NATO camo pattern, and putting some 33's on it, and driving the fool out of it.

No, I'm in Valley - which is less than 15 miles from the butthole of the state.;) I picked up at Warner Robins AFB, which about a 100 miles from here. I live in enemy territory, but that doesn't stop me from Rollin with Tide! 31 days to go!!!!

It is a 396/TH400 but the original engine is gone. I believe it to be a 375 HP L78 car because it has the single 3/8 fuel line. The 325 and 350 HP cars had a Q-jet, and had a return to the tank. The fuel line is stil in the clips, and looks to have never been taken off. I sure wish it had the original engine! I have found a '69 396 shortblock, but I need the heads, intake, and carb. It was originally Dover white and I'm pretty sure it had black hockey stripes. The old paint job is not a great one, and you can see where hockey stripes were once there in a few spots due to it not being sanded enough.

whats the website where you found your m1009 and why did it take so long to get it once you won the auction

I bought it from the military via govliquidation.com Any military surplus classified Demil B or Q requires an End Use Certificate. The EUC is basically a background check by a branch of the CIA to make you have no ties to terrorist organizations, etc. The first one is slowwww! Some take 100+ days. After you've done your first, it goes pretty quickly. You have to file one for any Demil B or Q auction, but after the first one, they usually clear in about 10 days. The positive is that the crap you have to go through keeps the price down because a lot people won't wait. I was able to get my Blazer running and driving with less than 50,000 miles for less than $1500, so to me, it was well worth the wait. It was a LONG agonizing wait though!

Yep my first euc for my m101a1 took about 6 weeks but this last one took only about a week and a half. Plus most of the info. is stored on the app. from the time before so it's way easier.

does it make it any easier if you are a veteran?i always wondered if we had preferance to getting it done any quicker.nice blazer by the way.i like the way that one you are going to make yours looks is.pretty cool lookin.

Thanks! No, it really doesn't seem to matter. There are some guys are still active duty military that have had to wait as long as anybody else.

Looks good - in fact it looks like I may have to start checking GovLiquidation for my next toy. I like that the M1009s were diesel, since the civilian diesel K5s I've looked at are usually badly rusted from 20 years of pushing a snowplow.

Have you downloaded the military tech manuals yet? (The dual 24v/12v electrical system is the main reason I've hesitated at picking up a M1009).

I haven't. In fact, I had all intentions of immediately swapping it over to 12V as soon as I got it, but everything works great, so as of now, I'm going to leave it alone. I won't hesistate to swap it over if it gives me trouble, because I've heard horror stories about the wiring in some of them too.

The starter is really the only 24V component. The alternators are 12V and have an isolated ground to produce the 24V. If you want more details or you want to convert to 12V, this is a good document:

Thanks for the link. We swapped a friend's over and changed it over to serpentine belts and HD cooling water pump, dual stat crossover, and D Max fan. We turbo'd it at the same time. It wasn't a bad changeover, but the link you provided has some good info in it.

Thanks Sloth - that's a good reference.

'67- C-30, did the DRMO lot your M1009 came from give you a chance to look it over first, or did you have to rely on the website description? Either way, I'm glad it worked out for you - I remember reading someone's thread (maybe on another board) where they ran into a bunch of trouble right away - it was still a great deal, but I think he fought the truck for a couple of weeks.

I did not preview it, but I could have. Here's how it shook out for me: I had been looking on ebay and Craigslist at M1009's a while, and somebody told me about GL. I got on there and found several of them in Warner Robins that were ending the next day. I called them (spoke with John McGhee) and he told me which ones ran. I decided to sign up and bid on the best looking one and I won it. I didn't know how the the EUC worked and certainly didn't know I'd have to wait 3 months to get it, but that's another story:rolleyes: I basically bought it on impulse, which I really never do, so I consider myself lucky. I signed up on steel soldiers forums and heard horror stories, and I was really nervous duriung the wait. Fortunately, as it turns out, John McGhee is one of the finest GL employees out there, and I had more than 1 person tell "If John says it runs, don't worry". The truck had some rust I couldn't see in the pics, but that's to be expected with this era truck, and buying something sight unseen. I'm still very pleased with it.

I would recommend previewing one if you have the chance, and I will do it in the future.

I gotta say too, that the experience recovering it at Warner Robins was a good one. Everyone was nice and helpful. I can't speak for other bases, but I'd highly recommend signing up on steel soldiers if you decide to get one. Theres a wealth of info there and there are guys who have bought MV's from everywhere and they can tell the good ones and bad ones. There's actually a forum dedicated to GL employees and experiences.
