Going to get an 83 1/2t 4x4 with the 6.2 diesel in it. Motor was run hot. Now it wont start. Whats the odds of it being just a blowen head gasket or something. I have a line on another motor just in case this one is toast.

Also does anyone use the 6.2 for towing. truck has 3.08s with a 700r4. Plans are to swap in an sm465. I usally dont have to go far if I have to tow a trailer. Mostly just a dump trailer for work.

Never did too much towing with mine, but I did pull some people out of ditches and stuff and moved a minivan with stuck brakes about 100 yards once haha. You should be fine as long as your trailer isn't huge. The 6.2 is underestimated. The 3.08s suck, but as long as you don't pull out into traffic and give yourself time to accelerate you should be fine. I ran my m1009 with 3.08s and 35s and I didn't mind.

Just need somethin with a little more low end torque. Have my 96 truck with a 5.7 and nv4500 and it sucks trying to get going taking off on a hill.

I have an 87 military blazer with the 6.2 and a little better gearing than you. I pull a car trailer frequently and don't have any problems loaded. It is not as powerful as a newer diesel. But it gets great fuel mileage and it seems to be pretty solid. I have never over heated one yet. But it sounds like it just blew a head gasket. The 6.2 engines though can be found pretty cheap. So I would recommend replacing it with another instead of spending the time to rebuild it.

First, the 6.2 is great for taking off, you will not be disappointed there, it's on the higher speeds that people complain, and the slow acceleration.
I never had a problem with mine, although I like the the turboed one better.
And if the engine has problems, just find a good one and replace it.
They are cheaper to find than to fix.
I have a collection of them for that reason.:thumb:

I like mine. Not a big power plant but it runs good. Pulling my lifted k30 into the wind kicked the hell out of it but we made it. My plan is a turbo to help a little on the hills.

Got the beast home. Checked the oil and it looks good. No water in it. It was black as can be. Water in the rad is good.

Im thinking maybe the temp gauge malfunctioned. Gona pull the starter and have it tested. Think that may be way it was cranking slow.

I put on the newer geardrive starter. Whips it over like a champ.

You might have gotten lucky. I would try starting it and see how it runs. I have a feeling that it was not overheating and the light that went on was to indicate low water in the radiator. Mine has that sensor and has gone off a few times on the trails.

Well, I wish you luck! Please let us know what you find out. Those motors are pretty tough. I suppose that is why the military chose them at the time. With the exception of accidentally putting gas in the fuel system or muddy water in the intake, they seem pretty indestructible. :waytogo:

Was looking at it and noticted the fuel line from the injection pump looks like it leaks. Going to pick up some fuel line and change it all out.

Im thinking that it just sucked some and thats why it was losing pwer and got hot.
