New Truck....Diesel or Gas?

I want a crew cab truck with a 6'6" bed. A half ton is probably adequate for what I currently do but GM doesnt offer that unless I step up to a 3/4 ton. I am looking an the new body style GMCs and I am trying to talk myself into the extra cost of diesel. I know it will have more power than the 6.0 and will get better fuel economy (especially when towing) but with all the added electronics and emissions crap to go wrong is it worth it?

I haul 800-1000lbs of crap in the truck fairly regularly and tow 2500-5000lbs every weekend. At some point a toy hauler might be towed as well and that obviously weighs more. I think Furd offers a half ton like I want but I hate the look of the new Furds and I am leery of Dodge.

2011gmc sierra denalis look good on the front ends. First new truck ive seen that i liked. if i were getting a new truck i would for sure get a 3/4 ton cew cab shortbed 4x4, but not sure whether or not to tell you gas or diesel. Those new duramax's are pretty sweet though....

there is no reason nowadays to buy a new gas truck unless its an import.

the diesel will hold its value way better, get better mileage ( not as much anymore but still), tow better, have way more grunt/power.

benefits of gas... its cheaper initially. sounds good with the right exhaust.

Since you're looking at crew cabs, you can't beat a Dodge Mega Cab for space.

if your already considering diesel thats what I would go with. maybe pick up a slightly used one instead of new.

and i agree those '11 denali HD trucks are nice, im sure it has a nice price tag also

As sexy as that Denali is, thats just a tiny bit out of my price range. Well, WAY out of my price range. Right now I am planing on a used 2008-2010 truck.

The Duramax is about a $7k option in a new truck. They dont seem to be commanding that much more than their gas counterpart from what I see.

buddy just picked up a 68k mile 07 club cab chevy shortbed 4x4 with a 5.3/auto for 17k. Very nice truck, i tried to talk him into a 3/4 ton but he rarely ever hauls anything short of a tv or a table.

It's not so bad once you get used to docking it in those short WalMart spaces. :rotfl:

Duramax... When your truck is at 300,000 miles you'll still be able to sell it. If it were gas you'd have to give it away.

Ah yes the old gas vs diesel debate.

It sounds like you don't need a diesel particularly. If I bought a truck like that one of it purposes in life would be towing. So diesel would be the only option for me. Except for around here if you are looking at two trucks one gas and one diesel that are the same price, the diesel will have at least 80k more miles on it. Whole lotta other things in a truck that can go wrong other than the motor.

If looking at a diesel I would steer clear of any that have had programmers on them. Run away if they have them stacked. I would look for the most stock truck I could.

Same with gas though. Fewer mods the better in that new of a truck.

i wanted a duramax... however couldnt afford it...
they wouldnt budge much on price...

however i ended up with a 2008 (in 2008) z-71 w/5.3L.....
love it...
i managed to get the price from $37,999 to $24,499 !!!!!!

the duramax was $48,000 and we got down to $39,500 and i just couldnt vouch that payment!!!!!!!!!

i keep contemplating selling it to buy a diesel.. every year i goto the Stealership and go for a trade in.. tell them i want my truck but a 2500HD and duramax.... if they can do something ill buy it... if i dont like the price im walking...
asked me what my payoff was.. i said $21,400.. he said cool you will break even.. 19k trade in.. 2000 down, 601 a month for 84 months... so i did the math in front of him... i said.. so 19k for my truck and 2k down from me.. is my payoff. he said yes.. I said oh so that is what you call breaking even... screwing me over.. he didnt like that... then i said im a dumb redneck.. but 6 from the first number of the payment times the 8 in the months... = $48k.. i said.. we will leave all other numbers out of this... but I thought we were working a deal cuz add $2k to that on my "Breaking even" and that is $50k+.. i said if i wanted to get screwed over I would have walked in with assless chaps!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAHAHAHHAHAHAAAA YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!! :flipoff10: is what i gave him as i walked out

now i owe 18k and have 25k miles.. so till next release of new vehicles!!!!!! :pimp:

I'll probably never buy another diesel truck....though I'm not "dissatisfied" with the two antiques I already have,I do not like the fact they are hard to start in the cold, always need glow plugs ,and to be plugged in overnight, but also the price of FUEL--diesel here is going for 3.60 to 3.99 a gallon already, and is expected to go much higher in a few months!...to fill the 44 galon tank in my Suburban will cost about half what I paid for the friggin thing!....:doah:...they dont get THAT much better fuel mileage really, the higher cost offsets any "savings"...

When I see tons of 90 and up trucks with gas engines going 300K without much troubles,I dont see an advantage for the "average joe homeowner" to have a diesel over a gas engine...diesel cost more to begin with, are more expensive and difficult to fix when things finally DO go wrong too...

Diesels do have better low end torque, might last longer,etc..but aren't worth the extra expense in my opinion..the new ones with a bunch of electronics to screw up and have to have "urea" added every so often scare me,they'll cost a fortune to fix when things start crapping out on it...thats why most people here who need diesels buy a new one every few years ,BEFORE the warranty expires!..

I know I dont need a diesel. :D

The weight I tow would be fine for a gas truck. I usually keep vehicles for a long time so I want the most reliability. I want a real reason to go diesel. Gas trucks are cheaper, the fuel and the maintenance is cheaper, and so is repair.

The longer you keep a truck the more sense it makes to go diesel.

When I was considering a newer used truck I used a spreadsheet to figure out exactly where I would be at. With higher cost of maintaining a diesel, higher repair costs, higher fuel costs but better mileage. I would have had to have kept the truck for 8 years before the diesel became the better value.

or if you have a source for cooking oil.. run that in an extra tank... well worth the $900 kit to run it... and FREE FUEL!!!!!!!!

I've been a diesel guy for a while, but I am staying away from the new ones. Too much upfront cost and too much emissions crap on them these days. I don't see how you can justify the cost and headache unless you really need the power.

I PLAN on keeping my next truck at least 8 years. From what I have read the LMM Duramax is the same as the LBZ except for some of the emissions stuff, which can be removed and reprogrammed. Its starting to not scare me as much (except the price)
