Rather general statement......

BUT as a rather general reply, everything you would normally do for regular maintanence willl be fine. Anytime i become the new owner of a vehicle i go ahead and dump money into the brakes, and all filters and such so i have a baseline for starting my regular maintanence. So that would be oil change, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, checking the brakes for being out of spec, yadda yadda.

I would also go ahead and do a diesel purge (see sticky at the top of this forum), using the power service diesel kleen (gray bottle) and then put an entire bottle of power service diesel additive (white bottle) in the tank and run it that way for the first tank. From that point on, i use little juice bottles, and put 8oz of diesel additive in the tank with every fill up in the jetta, and 16oz in the truck. basically twice the reccomended amount. I have good results with it. (one bottle of PS treats 100 gallons, and is almost 1000ml, or 32oz).

Running biodiesel is a hit or miss thing, it depends far more on the quality of your biodiesel than anything else. One point to remember, if you are running biodisel in a vehicle of this age, thats never run bio before, carry spare fuel filters. biodiesel is an excellent solvent, and will break lose all the varnishes and deposits in your gas tank and fuel lines from the dirty petro diesel. This deposits clog the fuel filter. which is the #1 reason people think biodiesel clogs your filter. I went through 2 filters before the issue was resolved. I currently run B20 biodiesel with 16oz of PS, exclusively in the truck, and have absolutely no issues. In fact the truck runs better than it does on dino juice.

Check the harmonic balancer. The rubber between the two halves should be solid, and in place. if it has cracks or is coming out from between the halves, you need a new balancer. stat. a bad balancer can lead to a failed crankshaft in these engines.

If its a th400 auto tranny, your shift points should be at 25mph and 45mph, or somewhere thereabouts. If your shift points are higher, check the vacuum lines from the vacuum pump, forward to the injection pump, and then back to the transmission vacuum modulator for a leak. fix the leak, shift points should return to normal.

peak fuel economy is when the engine is loaded and running around 1800rpm, online calculators are available to figure out what speed that is based on gear ratios and tire sizes. For me i get 22mpg around 55-60mph. on 33in tires, 3.08 axles, no lift, and the TH400 tranny.

Um... lets see, other than that, there are some items from heathdiesel.com, for relocating the glowplug relay as it can get heatsoaked in its stock location. and they have some upgrade goodies like injectors and controlers and such.
 
thanks i've messed with plenty of other diesels just never chevy's version. i heard about the pmc failure and bought the relocation kit, but i came with a #9 adjustable resistor. not sure what its for other than to plug into the computer. and i didnt know if there were any other bugs i should worry about. my plans for it are to haul my 2 horse trailer 6000 lb GVW. i was thinking a tranny temp gauge and a egt gauge just to be safe.
