What are your opinions on the new type Dana 60 inner axle seals?

Installed one side just like I would the stock inner axle seal, but I couldn't get the part that slips over the axle to spin using my fingers.

Is it a very tight fit? or is it difficult to push the axle thru?

Do I grease any part of the seal, like the part that the axle slips through before installing the axle?

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Ed

there snug seals for sure . i have installed a set or two . hard install and i light lube the seal surface of the shaft to help install in the seal then good to go .

no road time yet on them . but one has been full of oil for few years and no leaks . . .

yep, lube them up and make sure your shafts are nice and smooth where they ride in the seal.

I installed a set in my D60 last month, I had to modify mine to fit. I put some details/pics in my build thread. I haven't had and don't expect any trouble with them. They look like a good upgrade to me, but they WOULD NOT have worked unmodified in my axle. They possibly could have worked unmodified if they had been installed not fully seated by enough to allow for the thickness of the flanged portion of the inner seal, maybe .075"

I would think if you can't spin the inner portion of your seal you probably have an interference going on between your seal and axle tube.

This is boring progress but it might be meaningful for someone trying these F@rd axle seals.

I bought the National Seal equivalent of the Dana Spicer Part 52148

these seals would NOT fit my 1986 D60 housing without modification. The part the axle mates with has a flange on it that was .150" too big to go into my axle tubes.

I chucked it up in the lathe at work and turned the flange portion down til I had .050 clearance on the diameter. The shiny silver band is where I turned it down. I stopped just proud of the rubber portion.

I lubed the seal surfaces with some high pressure moly grease and pressed them in without incident.

I rigged up a press with some scrap 3" bar stock and a piece of 3/4" allthread and a chunk of 1" ID tubing. They go in tight but they pressed in without incident.

They both turn freely and I think they are good to go.

I'll put my kingpins/lower kingpin bearings back together tomorrow.

I'm not forum savvy enough to link this any cleaner, this is on page 5 of my build.
