new warn hubs

Bottom line:

If somebody else did the work, make them check it out. And make sure you're standing there when they do so you can see if they just completely forgot to put ANY grease in there or what.

The reason Warn says not to overpack the hubs with grease is that the outer gear (clutch ring) will not slide over the inner drive gear at all times if the hub is slammed with grease. Excess grease will create a suction between the gear teeth.

I never told anybody to pack it full. 87BrnRsd did. I simply said I didn't see how doing so would cause either heat or failure.

And yeah... OF COURSE use the right kind of grease. I don't think anybody in their right mind would use Crisco on wheel bearings, for instance. You have to use some common sense when maintaining one's vehicle.

Smoked a bearing on a boat trailer once, Got so hot it bent the part or the axle that the bearing rides on. Anyway we used some sort of veggie grease and a large rock to put it back together and bring it back to the campsite.
