New winch - how do I keep it?

Covers are better...

I have seen where crooks robbed winches with welded bolts by simply using a cheater pipe on a breaker bar to snap the bolts off!...covers welded over them work better...

A tow truck I saw had allen head bolts on its winch, with washers welded over the socket where you put the allen wrench..I suppose vise grips might get them out,but it would take a long time and make lots of noise!...another truck I saw had carriage head bolts normally used on farm tractor plows, with the heads up,and the nuts underneath were double nutted, the top one was welded to the bolt threads....gonna be a bear to get that one off!!...

Mines hidden between the frame rails. Someone would really have to want it to take that bad boy out. Have to pull the fron bumper, then they would have to deal with the 1/2" steel bolted all around the winch and find a way to pry it from between the frame rails. Took me all of 2 days to get that sucker in there.

I decided to tack weld a nut to the bolt

Just one should be enough. After all, if it won't come off quickly, it probably won't get stolen. I can cut one off with the Dremel in a couple minutes.

If a thief comes prepared to burn the nut off, then nothing I can do will stop him any way.

If and when I ever have to remove my winch,I will have to pull the radiator suport :D So thats purty theft proof :p:

All you people are wayyy of base on this one. :p:

The best way to keep your winch safe is to send it to me. I live in the country and the crime rate is waaaaayyyyyyy low. I will just keep it on my rig till its all worn out, then i'll send it back to ya and if it gets stolen, no big deal, it needed to be replaced anyways. :D :D :D :D :cool1:

I just welded a piece of angle iron over the mounting nuts on the bottom of the winch box. Quick cut with the cutting wheel for me, lots of hacksaw time for whoever wants to steal it.
That's what I did on my last winch.
