Considering this will be the last junkyard trip until spring, I decided to make a run. I was looking for mostly small stuff. Headlight connector, bolts for rear seat belts, and maybe a 6-lug 14bolt semi-float axle. I also have a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis, and I was hopeful to find a fender for that.
So, with LKQ having a half-off sale, I decided to start there. The place was a madhouse, there had to be at least 200 people inside the yard, and their selection of full-size trucks was pitiful. They had about 15 full-size trucks, and only one OBS truck, which was picked over. It was an 86 3/4 ton GMC, which had the axle I wanted, except the carrier was gone and it was an 8 lug.
I've handled 10 bolt axles before, but this is one beefy axle. The housing, shafts, etc should be much stronger than what I've got now. Snapped some pictures of spring perches and shock mounts for future reference.
I looked around the yard for a while longer, didn't find much, so I left.
As I was heading home, I decided I would stop at my preferred yard and see how picked over the only 88-91 K5 was.
This is an old pic, but the body is way better than mine. Interior is gutted, but one of these days, I'm pulling the doors. They close 1000x better than mine. Maybe even buy the whole truck. I'd love to have the doors, fenders, front axle, floor pans, etc. Oh and for your eagle eyes out there, that's a 84 C30 dually in the background. Got all my little parts (and upgraded sun visors) from it, and decided to stroll the yard.
This 88 Burb and 82 Blazer have been at this yard for at least 3 years. There isn't much left of these trucks, and I am surprised they haven't been crushed. They are about the only OBS trucks here. I decided to walk to the back of the yard, and see if they had been on a crushing spree. And as I got over the hill, I saw this truck.
It's an 85 C10 and it's in a bad spot in the yard. Where this truck rests is typically where the crush stacks are. So either it's going with the rest of the GM trucks, or it's #1 to get crushed. Interior is pretty nice on it.
The wind started howling, so I decided to bail out with my scores. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
